Ludwig Menke (born April 11, 1822 in Detmold ; † October 9, 1882 there ) was a painter and drawing teacher and was known for his detailed depiction of landscapes and buildings from the 19th century.

life and work

Ludwig Menke was born in 1822 as the son of the administrator of the Paulinenanstalt , named after Princess Pauline . After the public school had visited, he moved to the school in Detmold, he with the secondary maturity left. The artist Ernst von Valentini , who was employed as court painter at the Detmold court from 1795 to 1835, recommended him an artistic training. From 1841 to 1842 Menke then attended the Polytechnic in Hanoverand was trained in drawing and painting techniques, and as a drawing teacher. After completing his studies, Menke returned to Detmold and got a job as a drawing teacher in the real classes of the grammar school. He also worked at the teachers' seminar in Detmold to train educators for drawing lessons. In 1846 a trade school was founded and Menke was employed as a director. Even Ernst von Bandel , the builder of the Hermann Monument , had applied for the position. In 1852 Menke received the princely patent with which he was appointed drawing teacher at the grammar school and the secondary school for girls. He taught at four Detmold schools. Ludwig Menke had a marked pedagogical talent that his students appreciated. He published his didactic concept in 1876 under the title About the task and method of school drawing lessons. In years of work he had also created hundreds of sample sheets with drawing and coloring templates for drawing lessons. The later director of the trade school unfortunately destroyed this unique collection because he did not support this teaching method. Only four sheets with landscape motifs from the collection are now in the Lippisches Landesmuseum .

In his limited free time, Menke found peace and quiet in his artistic work. In the course of time he acquired a great skill in various painting and drawing techniques. This is how he created oil paintings , watercolors , lithographs and works in pencil, chalk and ink. He liked to paint and draw Lippe landscapes and monuments. The attention to detail, the correct perspective and the safe sense of space and color in his naturalistic works are remarkable . The artist Wilhelm Menke is therefore without question the most important Lippe landscape painter of the 19th century. At that time there was great public interest in Menke's work. His most important works include the representation of the Dörenschlucht from 1864, as well as twelve watercolors with motifs from Schieder . In 1865 he created a large-format oil painting of the Senne landscape and in 1875 the watercolor Heidental bei Hiddesen . On the occasion of the inauguration of the Hermann Monument, an album was published in 1875 with the reproductions of 20 Lippe landscapes with texts by Ludwig Altenbernd , Felix Dahn , Ferdinand Freiligrath , Emanuel Geibel and others.

One of his favorite motifs was the Externsteine . After Menke's drawings, lithographs were created, which were also reproduced and sold. The buildings painted or drawn by Menke include the residential castle in Detmold, the Lopshorn hunting lodge destroyed in 1945 , the old mill in Hiddesen , the Obere Mühle in Detmold, the Hartröhren forester's lodge that burned down after the Second World War , the old Detmold State Theater that burned down in 1912 , the old one State hospital in Detmold and many other buildings.

Menke's best-known student was Emil Zeiß (1833–1910). In contrast to this, Menke also exhibited his works in exhibitions outside Lippe. For example, he presented his pictures in Hanover and Bremen . In 1878 he was represented with his works at an exhibition in Hamburg . Among them was the oil painting Am Kaiserweg on the Grotenburg, actually intended for Bandel's golden wedding . It was sold to England because Bandel had died before his 50th marriage anniversary. However, Menke was cheated of the purchase price of this and other paintings by a swindler.

The artist's estate is kept and administered in the Lippe State Library and the Lippe State Museum. They are in possession of numerous oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and sketchbooks. This is a valuable collection of pictorial documents that show historical cityscapes and buildings that have long since disappeared. The life and work of Ludwig Menkes have not been properly appreciated, assessed and documented to this day.

Ludwig Menke died of a stroke on October 9, 1882 at the age of 60.
