The southern Taurach (also Lungau Taurach ) is a left tributary of the Mur and flows across the Lungau . It is one of the two rivers called Taurach , both of which have their source near the Radstadt Tauern Pass , but drain in opposite directions. The two valleys that run down from the Tauern Pass are also both called Taurach Valley . Together they connect the Ennstal with the Murtal in a north-south direction.

The southern Taurach rises near Obertauern on the (Radstädter) Tauernpass , and flows through the Twenger Talpass . In the case of separation , it enters the outer Taurach valley and takes on the Latschfeldbach from the right . Then it runs south via Tweng to Mauterndorf , where it enters the Tamsweg basin , which it now crosses eastwards. It takes the Lonka (also Longa) from the Weißpriach valley to the left at Mariapfarr , the Lignitz (Lignitzbach) at Lintsching , the Göriachbach at St. Andrä and the Lessachbach between Haslach (St. Andrä) and Wölting . At Tamsweg it finally flows into the Mur. The southern Taurach is about 40 km long.

It is also the namesake of the Taurach Railway Museum Railway , which accompanies the river over the last few kilometers.
