The MMA Club (Mixed Munich Arts) was an internationally known techno club in Munich district Maxvorstadt .

History and venue

The club, usually only briefly referred to as MMA in parlance , was located in a disused and gutted thermal power station, as was the former techno club KW - Das Heizkraftwerk (1996-2003) and Berliner Berghain (since 2004), which were also based in Munich . The central heating and power plant on Katharina-von-Bora-Strasse was once built as part of the headquarters of the so-called "party quarter" of the NSDAP between 1933 and 1937 and supplied the former Führerbau and today's headquarters of the Munich University of Music and Theater via an underground corridor system . After the war, the Bavarian Ministry of Finance took over all Nazi buildings and the headquarters were sold to Stadtwerke. The thermal power station stood empty from 2006 and was gutted in 2013, with 300 tons of steel removed from the boiler hall alone. The opening of the Techno Club in March 2014 received a lot of media attention, among others, the Focus , the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Bild Zeitung reported . The boiler hall, described by Focus as the “impressive cathedral of energy”, with a ceiling of 21 meters high, offers the MMA's main floor 450 square meters or 10,000 cubic meters of space. In addition, there was a smaller "music club in the club" in the basement of the former car hall of the headquarters, which was supposed to act as a counterpoint to the large hall, a 10 meter high project room for audiovisual productions by artists, as well as several galleries with an additional 250 square meters of exhibition space. and event space, which gave the club building a labyrinth-like appearance. Most of the club was about 10 meters underground. The gigantic building was appreciated by performing techno artists because of its “rough, old, dark and energetic” atmosphere. The online magazine for electronic music and club culture Thump compared the industrial factory style of the MMA with the legendary old Tresor Club (1991–2005) in Berlin.

Protests and actions against the closure of the MMA 2019

At the end of January 2019, numerous media reported that the MMA was threatened with closure. The municipal utilities would plan to demolish the thermal power station from the 1930s in the summer of 2019 and to build 85 apartments and company apartments on the site. 50 to 80 employees of the MMA and numerous artists exhibiting on the site were threatened by the loss of the cultural site. Several initiatives and media called on the music and cultural scene to resist the decision. Among other things, the operators called for the hashtag #SaveMMA to be used to draw attention to the impending closure. An online petition initiated by guests of the MMA and addressed to the Munich City Council calls for the preservation of the internationally known and unique cultural location for Munich. According to the initiators of the online petition, Munich needs such space for the independent art and culture scene more than any other city, and art and culture should not be played off against apartments. The petition against the closure of the MMA was signed by more than 11,000 supporters from 34 countries. The artist community of 30 people, which is also located in the heating power plant and affected by the closure, organized a protest march against their displacement in July 2019, many of the artists left Munich after the site was closed due to the lack of space for artists.

DJs and music

Internationally known DJs and live acts played almost exclusively at the MMA, such as Richie Hawtin , Adam Beyer , Ben Sims , Terence Fixmer , Len Faki , Ben Klock , Marcel Dettmann , Anthony Rother , Gregor Tresher , Alan Fitzpatrick , Nina Kraviz , Charlotte de Witte , Amelie Lens , Extrawelt , Maceo Plex and Johannes Heil . Residents included Javier Bähr, Svar, Paul and The Hungry Wolf and Marcella. Due to the similar line-up , the MMA was often referred to as the “ Berghain des Südens” and compared to this club. Club nights in the hall usually lasted until 10 am, but individual events could also last up to 48 hours.

Mixed arts concept

The Mixed Munich Arts was not just a techno club, but was supposed to bring together electronic music and avant-garde art in accordance with the chosen name motto (in German about "mixed arts"). The operators themselves put it as follows: "String quartets meet graffiti, photo openings meet interactive performances, video artists meet techno DJs". In addition to techno club nights, the MMA also hosted theater performances, concerts, art exhibitions, graffiti exhibitions and Munich’s first street food market, as well as “Christmas markets for hip-hop fans”.

Sub-projects

Bora Beach

Since 2017, the MMA has also been running a beach bar on Munich's Praterinsel , where minimalist electronics were played for adults, as well as cocktails and vegan food, but also sand toys for children. The music was based on the requirements of the techno club, but was more relaxed in accordance with the family-friendly orientation of the place.

Electric Elephant

Since 2017, the MMA Club has owned the Electric Elephant restaurant, which is also located in the heating power plant and mainly served Indian cuisine. The restaurant was minimalist and also included an outdoor terrace with a lounge area. The MMA already cooperated with an Italian restaurant here.

reception

The MMA Club was regularly the subject of reports in national and international daily newspapers, news magazines and specialist magazines for electronic music and club culture. The British Guardian described the club as "a huge techno temple that can take on any club in Berlin". In its opening year, the club was already one of the best new clubs in Europe. Since then the MMA has been counted among the best clubs in Germany and also among the "best clubs in the world". In the Resident Advisor Ranking, the MMA was rated as one of the most popular clubs in Munich (3rd place, as of August 2017).

Awards

At the Munich Nightlife Awards 2016 , the MMA Club won 1st place in the Music category and 2nd place in the Booking category . The club was able to defend these two places in 2017 as well.
