Magnesium peroxide is a chemical compound made up of the elements magnesium and oxygen . It has the formula MgO 2 and belongs to the group of peroxides .

Extraction and presentation

The hemihydrate of magnesium peroxide can be precipitated with hydrogen peroxide from a saturated solution of magnesium nitrate . The anhydrate can be obtained from this by heating it in nitrogen .

It is also possible to obtain it by reacting hydrogen peroxide with magnesium oxide . The resulting crystalline substance has the composition MgO 2 · 0.12 H 2 O 2 · 0.61 H 2 O.

properties

Magnesium peroxide is a finely powdered, colorless compound. It is similar to calcium peroxide and releases oxygen through a controlled reaction with aqueous solutions. It has a crystal structure of the pyrite type and decomposes above 300 ° C to form magnesium oxide MgO and oxygen.

use

Magnesium peroxide is used to release oxygen in the cosmetic, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. It is also used to reduce contamination of the groundwater and to wash it free. Magnesium peroxide is also used for the natural decontamination and quality improvement of agricultural land. It can therefore also be used as a bleach or disinfectant . It is also used in deodorants and shower gels .

Under the name Ozovit MP it is on the market as a medical product for the treatment of digestive disorders.

The first machine- propelled submarine, the Ictíneo II , used magnesium peroxide to generate both heat and breathing oxygen.
