The Mainaue between Sommerach and Köhler is a nature reserve in the municipalities of Sommerach , Nordheim am Main and in the districts of Köhler von Volkach and Neuses am Berg von Dettelbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen .

location

The protected area is located in the extreme southwest of the Volkach community area on the outskirts of the Köhler district. Further south, separated by the Main, begins the area of the municipality of Nordheim am Main. The protected area stretches across a long area on both sides of the Main, touches the area of the Neuses am Berg district and ends in the area of the community of Sommerach.

In the south-east, the right bank of the Main near Sommerach adjoins the area.

By resolution of September 22, 1995, the nature reserve was designated with an area of around 93 hectares . The Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection assigned the cadastral number NSG-00500.01 to the area. The protected area is part of the Natura-2000 network and thus an element of the Maintal protected area between Schweinfurt and Dettelbach with the number DE6027471. In addition, the entire area is designated as a bird sanctuary and a flora-fauna habitat.

The protection purpose is the preservation of the diverse site mosaic of the floodplain. In particular, meadows, remains of alluvial forest , groyne fields and silting areas on the Main , as well as tall perennials and willow bushes should be protected. In addition, the connection between the Main and the surrounding landscapes is at the center of the purpose of the protected area.
