description
By resolution of May 15, 1990, the protected area near Sommerach was designated with an area of around 19.5 hectares . The Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection assigned the cadastral number NSG-00372.01 to the area. The protected area is part of the Natura-2000 network and thus an element of the Maintal protected area between Schweinfurt and Dettelbach with the number DE6027471. In addition, the entire area is designated as a bird sanctuary and a flora-fauna habitat.
The main protection purpose is the preservation of the typical alluvial forests around the Main. In addition, so-called groyne fields of different silting stages in combination with the willow bushes, alluvial forest remains and herbaceous hillside forests and meadows are to be protected.
The so-called Fuchssee, which was originally an island, can be found in the nature reserve on the Schwarzenau Main side. After the sand and gravel had been extracted here, the body of water was created that today offers a habitat for 177 protected animal species.
