After the war he worked in ship salvage in the Philippines ; there he receives a medallion from a shaman through which he can establish a telepathic connection with the sharks. On his return to Key West , Stein devotes himself to protecting the sharks. While he has a close relationship with them, his knowledge of human nature is poor; over time he turns more and more away from society. Having become aware of his abilities, Stein is approached by the scientist Whitney and the nightclub owner Barney. He tells the scientist where he can find the sharks in the sea; Whitney then drives out with his helpers Pete and Charlie and kills several sharks. Stein murders the three men and throws their bodies to the sharks. Meanwhile, Barney wants to use a shark on a strip show with his wife Karen; for this he torments the animal.
