Malaja Wischera ( Russian Малая Вишера ) is a city in Novgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 12,461 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Malaya Wischera station

The city is located in the Ilmen lowlands about 75 kilometers northeast of the oblast capital Veliky Novgorod on the Malaja Wischerka (also Malaja Wischera ), a source river of the Wischera flowing into the Volkhov .

Malaja Wischera is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

The city is located on the St. Petersburg – Moscow railway line , the former Nikolaibahn (km 162) , which was opened in 1851 .

history

Malaja Wischera was created in 1843 in connection with the construction of the Nikolaibahn. The name after the river stands for Kleine Wischera . In 1860 a railway depot was built and one of the first technical schools in Russia was opened.

In 1921 it was granted city rights.

During the Second World War , Malaja Wischera was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on October 24, 1941 and was recaptured on November 20, 1941 by troops of the 52nd Army of the Red Army during the Battle of Tikhvin .

Culture and sights

In the village of Pechowo , 40 km from Malaja Wischera, there is a wooden church from the 17th century. In the surrounding villages of Snamenka , Possochowo and Kamenka , country manors from the 19th century have been preserved.

In Malaja Wischera there is a factory for technical glass, an electrotechnical factory and wood processing companies.
