Malazgirt

Malazgirt (ancient name Man (t) zikert , Kurdish Milazgir or Kelê , from Armenian Manavazgerd ) is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Eastern Anatolian province of Mus . The city lies on the Murat river , 50 km north of Lake Van . It is separated from its high plateau by the 4058 m high mountains of the Süphan Dağı . Malazgirt is located about 100 km northeast of the provincial town on the D280 highway, which runs through the district in an east-west direction.

The district is the easternmost in the province, the third largest in the province (18.4%) and also in third place in terms of population (12.6% of the district's population). The population density is below the provincial value (of 47.2 inhabitants per km²).

The county borders on Bulanik County to the west, Erzurum Province to the north and northwest , Ağrı Province to the east and Bitlis Province to the south .

In addition to the district town (2018: 38.7% of the district population), it consists of another municipality ( Belediye ): Konakkuran (1,702 inhabitants) north of Malazgirt. history

The city, which was called Minouas in Greek in 100 , was already an important trading center in the Kingdom of Armenia . In 1071 the Battle of Manzikert took place here, in which the Seljuks under Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantine Empire . The betrayal of Andronikos Dukas caused panic in the ranks of the Byzantine army and the Eastern Roman Emperor Romanos IV. Diogenes was captured.

With this battle began the slow decline of Byzantium and the dehellenization of Asia Minor. The Turkmen Seljuks, who advanced around 1060, subsequently conquered large parts of Anatolia ; from 1300 onwards the Ottomans, related to them, ruled . In the 12th century, As a result of the Crusades , Byzantium was able to recapture the western coastal regions and part of the heartland for several decades.

A large part of the medieval city wall made of black basalt was preserved. An inscription above one of the city gates probably dates from the beginning of the 13th century.

According to the city seal, the place received the status of a municipality (Belediye) in 1929
