Månegarm is a Viking Metal band from Sweden , which was founded in 1995 in Norrtälje under the name Antikrist . Since January 2009 she has been under contract with Regain Records .

The name Månegarm is the Swedish spelling for Managarm , a wolf from Norse mythology .

Band history

The band was founded in 1995 by Svenne Rosendal, Jonas Almqvist and Pierre Wilhelmsson in Norrtälje . At the beginning the band should only play fast, primitive metal with Swedish lyrics. After Mårten Matsson joined the band as another guitarist and Erik Grawsiö as drummer, they began their first band rehearsals under the name Antikrist. In November 1995 they recorded their first song Månljus . In early 1996 they had changed their name to Månegarm. The name was chosen because of the reference to Norse mythology that fits a Viking metal band. Shortly after they began using the new name with the recordings of the first demo - EP Vargaresa (in German, The Journey of the wolf '). After the recordings, Rosendal and Matsson left the band and were replaced by Jonny Wranning (vocals) and Markus Andé (guitar).

On their second demo EP Ur nattvindar , Månegarm used elements of folk metal such as violin parts and female vocals for the first time , which is still formative for their style today. In mid-1997, the band managed to get signed to the record label Displeased Records with this demo . A short time later, Wranning left the band; he was replaced by Viktor Hemgren as the new singer. At the end of the year Månegarm began recording their debut album Nordstjärnans tidsålder (in German 'Age of the North Star '). It was released in June 1998.

In the summer of 1999 the recordings for the second studio album Havets vargar (in German 'Wolves of the Sea') began. Due to differences of opinion between the record label and the studio owner, the band had to pause recording for five months. During this time Hemgren was fired because he was accused of lack of interest by the other band members. It was decided that drummer Grawsiö should also do the vocals. In December 1999, the band went to Studio Underground in Västerås with the material they had already recorded to complete the album. At this time, Janne Liljekvist, whose violin playing could already be heard on previous albums, was accepted as a permanent member of the band. With this line-up, the recordings for the album could be completed. It was released in the summer of 2000.

After the release, the band decided to take a break from their activities in order to gain new motivation and ideas. After a few months, Månegarm finally began to record their third album Dödsfärd (in German ' Journey of Death'). It was released in August 2003 and made the band popular within the scene.

The band's two demos were re-released as a remaster in 2004 under the name Vargaresa - The Beginning . That year the band recorded their fourth album Vredens tid (in German 'Age of Anger'), which was released in September 2005. In 2005 Månegarm also appeared at some metal festivals in Europe for the first time.

In January 2006, the recordings for the fifth album Urminnes hävd (The Forest Sessions) began. It is a purely acoustic album and with a playing time of around 27 minutes is very short compared to the previous album. The style of the album is very different from the other works of the band, as many traditional instruments (for example djembé , jew's harp , flute and acoustic guitar ) and clear vocals are used and the pieces overall have a comparatively slow tempo. The album was released in June 2006. In 2006, the band toured Europe for two weeks with Skyforger and Goddess of Desire .

The record contract with Displeased Records expired with the release of this album and Månegarm were able to sign a contract with the Swedish record label Black Lodge. In October 2006 the band set to record their sixth album Vargstenen (in German 'Wolfsstein'), which was released in May 2007.

In January 2009 Månegarm moved to the record label Regain Records . On October 22nd, 2009, the album Nattväsen (in German 'night creatures') was released. The first single for this album, Mina fäders hall , was released on September 17, 2009 via Myspace .

In June / July 2012 the violinist Janne Liljekvist decided to leave the band permanently. The reason given by the band was that they lacked the motivation to “bring in the effort necessary to advance the band”; Månegarm added that nothing will change in their musical style.

style

Månegarm use a fast style influenced by Black Metal in their music , which has been enriched with elements of Folk Metal since their second demo . Often times on their albums fast, black-metal-heavy pieces alternate with slow, "folky" pieces. Even within individual songs, a melodic violin or flute part is often used as a counterpoint to fast, extreme metal. Singer Grawsiö's vocals alternate between growls , belting and occasional clear vocals; Female clear vocals are also represented in many songs.

On her acoustic album Urminnes hävd , the focus is on the acoustic guitar as an instrument and only clear vocals are used. Overall, the album has a strong folk style.

Most of the pieces are in Swedish , but there were always songs with English lyrics ( e.g. Pagan War and Ravenous on Dödsfärd or Daughters of Eve on Ur nattvindar ). Only on the album Legions of the North are most of the lyrics in English.
