Manuel Schmitt (born November 8, 1988 in Oberhausen ) is a  German opera directortheater director and filmmaker .

biography

Schmitt grew up in Mülheim an der Ruhr , where he received piano lessons at a young age and later cello lessons. As a child actor, he was on stage from 1999 to 2001 in Peter Maffay's musical “ Tabaluga and Lilli ” in what was then the Teatro Centro , now the Metronom Theater . As a teenager, he began directing amateur theaters for the first time and attended the Aalto Music Theater in Essen with Tilman Knabe and Andreas Baesler .

From 2009 to 2013 Schmitt studied directing at the August Everding Theater Academy in Munich . From 2013 to 2016 he studied philosophy at the University of Philosophy in Munich. Schmitt was Willy Decker's assistant director at the Ruhrtriennale in Bochum for over three years . This was followed by five years as an assistant director at the Bayreuth Festival . He later worked as an assistant at the Royal Opera Covent Garden in London and at the Frankfurt Opera .

During his studies in Munich, Schmitt staged an adaptation of Nuran David Cali's “Spring Awakening”, “Bungee Jumping” by Jaanätte , and Lukas Bärfuss's play “Parzival”. In 2012 the first opera direction followed with Gioachino Rossini'sL'inganno felice ” at the Akademietheater in Munich. The Richard Wagner Association in Munich accepted him into its scholarship foundation in 2012. With a cross-over project from Philip Glass music theater "Galileo Galilei" and Heinar Kippardt's play " In the J. Robert Oppenheimer case " in the Reaktorhalle in Munich, Schmitt graduated with a diploma.

In 2013 Schmitt began his career as a freelance director. First at the Theater an der Rott in Eggenfelden , where he staged the play "Quartetto" by Ronald Harwood . Gerd Lohmeyer played the leading role . This was followed in the next season by Jacques Offenbach's operetta The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein , also in the Theater an der Rott, where director Karl Sibelius took over the title role.

In 2014 he worked with the Hungarian director Arpad Schilling at the Bavarian State Opera. Together, Schmitt and Schilling developed and staged the theater project "Youth of a City" for the Munich Opera Festival of the Bavarian State Opera.

This was followed by two productions at the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater . There Schmitt staged Johanna Jäger's play “Frau Holle” based on the Brothers Grimm in 2015 and in 2016 “Die goldene Gans” by Raphael Protiwensky.

In 2015, his production of “The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein” was taken over at the Trier Theater , where it was again implemented by Schmitt in a revised version.

In July 2016, Schmitt directed a Bern German version of Rossini's " IL barbiere di Siviglia " under the Bern German title "Der Schärer vo Ämmewil" at the Lueg Arena in Switzerland .

Schmitt gives lectures on his work as a young director, including at the Bayreuth Festival as part of the "Caesuras" program, where he offers festival visitors insights into the development processes of the productions. In March 2015 he gave a lecture for the Richard Wagner Association Munich on the subject of "Children, creates new things - about young directors and new staging approaches" in the Künstlerhaus on Lenbachplatz in Munich.

In 2017 Schmitt completed his debut film Glass Between Us , which celebrated its world premiere on March 22nd at the Sydney World Film Festival Australia . The documentary about an inmate on death row in Texas and his family is his first work in the film genre . For this film he was named "Best Director of a Short Documentary" at the International Filmmaker Festival in Berlin .
