Mara Genschel (* 1982 in Bonn ) is a German writer and performer .

life and work

After graduating from high school, Mara Genschel studied musicology in Cologne and until 2004 school music at the Detmold University of Music, majoring in violin . From 2004 to 2008 she studied at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig . In 2008 she made her debut with the volume of poems Tonbrand Schlaf , which was received controversially. The artist book Vom Nachtalpenweg in collaboration with Valeri Scherstjanoi 2009 was followed by increasingly conceptual publications. With the ongoing series of booklets Reference area in self-distribution (handwritten processing of the prints; self-distribution without ISBN), Genschel has been testing a form of publication since 2012 outside the conventional book trade. For the radio play War of the manifestos - Futurism conquered Europe by Bernd Kempker that the WDR produced in February 2009 by the German Academy of Performing Arts as the month radio play was excellent, Mara Genschel put the music together.

In 2015, Bertram Reinecke published a material volume on her work. In 2017 and 2018, cute thoughts (roughbooks) and Gablenberger Tagblatt (brueterich press) were two more individual publications that can no longer be clearly assigned to a specific genre.

Genschel's field of work also extends to radio works, installations and performances. In addition to programs for the JetztMusik series on SWR2 , her radio play Villa Genschel was broadcast on Hr2-kultur in 2017 . She showed installation work at the Kunsttempel Kassel, the Forum Stadtpark Graz, at the Darmstadt Summer Courses and in the Tranzit in Bucharest .

In addition to dedicated stage work, Genschel often designs performances spontaneously and in response to invitations to public appearances such as readings or lectures.

Mara Genschel lives in Berlin.

reception

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reviewed Genschel's debut volume of poems Tonbrand Schlaf in 2008 under the title Bulettenexperiment : “Some things sound like Jandl , others like Kling, to whom she dedicates one of the poems. Or are they rudiments of poems? [...] A diary note, pimped up typographically - but a poem? "

literaturkritik.de sums up: “Mara Genschel does not level her texts down to a clarified poetical correctness , but allows not only language doubts but also extremes and thus doubting. Contemporary poetry would benefit from more of this radical writing attitude. "

SWR2 , the cultural program of Südwestrundfunk, dedicated a radio broadcast to her in September 2008, describing her with "Music and words, sound and meaning - these are the poles around which her work revolves" and broadcast her short radio play The Blind Poet .

In 2013, Tobias Amslinger examined Genschel's unusual publication strategy in the journal Kritische Ausgabe . With her ongoing series of booklets, Reference Area (handwritten processing of the prints; self-distribution without ISBN ), Genschel is currently trying out a form of publication that goes beyond the conventional book trade.
