Marco Cattaneo (born June 17, 1974 in Saronno ) is a former Italian cross-country skier who specialized in ski marathons . His greatest successes include victories at the Jizera Mountains Run (2006, 2009), American Birkebeiner (2005, 2006) and Transjurassienne (2008).

Career

Cattaneo made his international debut as part of the Cross-Country Continental Cup in December 1998. After two first good results in Brusson and two more in the following year, he switched to the Cross-Country World Cup in March 2000 . However, he clearly missed the points in both races in Bormio . At the start of the following 2000/01 season , Cattaneo again clearly missed the points when he finished 70th in Santa Caterina . In February 2001 in Asiago he finished 22nd in the sprint for the first time in the points. Also in the 2001/02 season Cattaneo started with a points win in Asiago. In January 2002 he also collected further World Cup points in Val di Fiemme .

A few weeks later he made his debut in the Cross-Country Marathon Cup and achieved a first top result in the 70 km mass start in Predazzo with seventh place. In Otepää he was also able to finish eighth among the top ten. The Italian achieved further top 10 results in Morez, Hayward and Samedan. Since he did not take part in the World Cup by the end of the season, he finished the season in 104th place in the overall ranking and 50th in the Sprint World Cup overall ranking.

At the beginning of the 2002/03 season , he again collected World Cup points in Cogne . However, it remained the only point win for Cattaneo in the season. From January 2003 he concentrated more on the Marathon Cup and only rarely started in the World or Continental Cup. On February 16, 2003, Cattaneo was in Ottawa for the first time in a ski marathon, the Gatineau Loppet , on the podium. He finally celebrated his first victory in 2005 at the American Birkebeiner in Hayward . In winter 2005/06 Cattaneo also started in the Alpine Cup for the first time. He won the race in Toblach .

In January 2006 he won the Jizera Mountains run in Bedřichov . In March, Cattaneo started the 90 km Wasalauf race in Sälen , Sweden , and was 29th again collecting World Cup points. He ended his career in 2012. In total, he was able to celebrate six victories in Marathon Cup races. He won the overall ranking in the 2005/06 and 2008/09 seasons.
