Marcus Franz (born March 6, 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian doctor and politician . From October 2013, Franz was a member of the National Council on a mandate from the Stronach team . From June 2015 to March 2016 he was a member of the ÖVP club , and from March 1, 2016 he was a non-party member of parliament. He resigned from the National Council on November 8, 2017.

Life

After attending elementary school and high school in Vienna, where he passed his Matura in 1981 , Franz studied medicine at the University of Vienna . In 1987 he received his doctorate . In 1992 he became a general practitioner and in 1997 internal medicine . Franz is a specialist in gastroenterology and oncology .

During his work as a doctor, he worked, among other things, at the General Hospital of the City of Vienna (AKH Wien) and at the hospitals in Wiener Neustadt and Vienna-Hietzing . He has been running his own medical practice in Vienna since 2007. From 2009 he was also Primarius of the Internal Department of the Hartmannspital and until January 2014 also its medical director. In addition to his medical work, Franz also writes political guest comments, including in the press .

Franz is a political career changer . He became a member of the National Council in October 2013 as a non-party member of the Stronach team, then was initially the deputy chairwoman of the parliamentary club and until September 2014 also the party's general secretary. In June 2015 he and Georg Vetter moved from the Stronach team to the ÖVP parliamentary club at the invitation of Reinhold Lopatka , the club boss of the ÖVP in the National Council, whereby Lopatka particularly emphasized Franz's “Christian-conservative values”.

In a blog entry at the beginning of 2016, Franz wrote: " As the metaphorical 'mother' of the state, Ms. Merkel wants to make up for the negative fact of the non-existent or too few children of her own by bringing in many, many young migrants." This statement was also sharply criticized by the ÖVP, whereupon he left the ÖVP club on March 1, 2016.
