Karl Johan Marcus Vinnerborg (born August 8, 1972 ) is a Swedish professional ice hockey referee who has so far mainly been used in the Elitserien and international matches. In the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons he was used as the first European referee in the North American professional league NHL . He has been active in the Swiss National League A since the beginning of the 2014/15 season .

Career

Vinneborg first played ice hockey at IF Troja-Ljungby , in 1986 he also took part in the prestigious national U17 TV swaddling tournament for the team from the province of Småland . After finishing his active career, he finally started his career in 1987 as a referee in lower-class ice hockey. Before he completed his training as main referee for the Elitserien , Vinneborg had already been active as a line judge in the second-class Allsvenskan for several years .

In 2006, the referee took part in the U20 World Cup in Vancouver , Canada , where he was finally nominated for the third place match between Finland and the United States because of his performance as main referee . Then he also took part in the Men's World Cup in 2006 in Riga , where he was used until the quarter-finals.

Vinnerborg and his colleague Thomas Andersson finally became the first professional referees of the Swedish Elitserien in the 2006/07 season . He was also called back to the World Championships in 2007 , where he eventually led the final between Canada and Finland. In 2008 the Swede was used together with Brent Reiber in the final of the IIHF European Champions Cup 2008 between HC Sparta Prague and HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk . The tournament was one of three tests of the new four-referee system, which was later also used at world championships.

In 2008 , Marcus Vinnerborg won the SICO: s guldpipa for the first time , a prize that is awarded annually to the best referee of the Elitserien season after a vote among the players. After receiving the trophy in the run-up to the third championship final between Linköpings HC and HV 71 Jönköping , the referee was criticized for not having given a penalty against HV 71. Johan Åkerman , defender of Jönköpinger, had thrown a broken club, outnumbered, at the puck, whereupon Linköping lost the game and Vinnerborg was no longer used in the next game.

In the same year Vinneborg was nominated for the third time for the ice hockey world championship . Together with his compatriot Christer Lärking he led the final between Russia and Canada, which meant his second participation in the final in a row.

In a preparatory game for the 2008/09 season , the Swede suffered a neck injury, due to which he missed the start of the season. On September 30, 2008, Vinneborg and Don Koharski formed the first referee team of IIHF and NHL officials in a test match between SC Bern and the New York Rangers that was ever used in an international match. In 2009 , Marcus Vinnerborg was awarded the guldpipa as the best referee of the Elitserien for the second time in a row .

In 2010 the National Hockey League announced that Vinneborg would be the first European referee in the North American professional league for the 2010/11 season . On November 16, 2010, he led in the encounter of the Dallas Stars against the Anaheim Ducks for the first time a game in the National Hockey League. After a total of two seasons and 40 games in the NHL, Vinnerborg returned to Sweden in the summer of 2012 for family reasons. There he continued to lead games in the Elitserien , until he moved to the Swiss National League A at the beginning of the 2014/15 season.
