history

In the 16th century the Reformation was introduced in the Altmark , with it the population of Beetzendorf and the Marienkirche also became Evangelical-Lutheran.

In 1852, Salzwedel became the seat of a missionary vicariate , which also included Beetzendorf, some 20 kilometers away. Their first outstation was Ristedt, only about 7 kilometers away from Beetzendorf . In 1870 the services in Ristedt were stopped again because many Catholics had moved away or died.

In 1911 the Salzwedel parish set up a Catholic emergency chapel in a half-timbered house in Beetzendorf under the direction of Pastor Richard Schwunk . Their care was entrusted to the new priest Franz Wortmann. In 1920 the Mission Vicarie Salzwedel was raised to a parish. At that time, 31 Catholics were already living in Beetzendorf. In 1933 a census showed that 50 of the 1572 inhabitants of Beetzendorf were Catholic.

In 1937, the construction of today's church began in front of the house with the emergency chapel. On Easter Sunday 1938, she was benediziert , the same year also were bell and organ consecrated.

On May 1, 1939, the parish vicarie Beetzendorf was established, which included 70 localities. This also included Calbe and Klötze , where even then there were other Catholic places of worship. Josef Thiele was the first vicar in Beetzendorf.

After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in the Beetzendorf area increased due to the influx of Catholic refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Reich . Beetzendorf had a local priest until the 1970s ; then the parish vicarie was looked after by the priests from Klötze, then from Oebisfelde, and finally from Gardelegen.

In 1996/97 the Caritas dormitory named after Friedrich Lorenz was built on Audorfer Weg for the mentally handicapped. The parsonage was also sold in the 1990s and a parish hall was built behind the church, roughly at the point where the building with the former emergency chapel was located. In the place of the demolished rectory there is now a residential and commercial building with a pharmacy and a butcher's shop .

On November 1, 2007, the parishes of Gardelegen and Oebisfelde , the Kuratien Kalbe and Mieste , as well as the parish vicarages Beetzendorf and Klötze were established, from which on May 2, 2010 today's parish “St. Hildegard ”was formed. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that 94 of the 3313 inhabitants of the political community Beetzendorf, and thus just under 3%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.

The small brick church is around 33 meters above sea level . There is a bell in its cross-crowned tower. The statue of the Virgin Mary above the entrance portal was installed in 1961 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the first chapel. A mission cross on the side wall of the church commemorates the popular mission of 1953.

The church stalls leave a central aisle free and offer 48 seats. The back wall of the chancel is dominated by a crucifix . The baptismal font and a confessional are located under the organ gallery . Since the pipe organ can no longer be played, the chanting of the church service is supported by an electronic organ. The interior also includes a wooden altar , a tabernacle , a statue of the Virgin Mary and 14 stations of the cross .
