Marianne "Manni" Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, actually Maria Anna Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, b. Mayr-Melnhof, (born  December 9, 1919 in Salzburg ), known in the media outside Austria as Princess zu Sayn-Wittgenstein , is an Austrian photographer who, as a so-called “social expert”, has photographed numerous international celebrities.

Life

Marianne Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn was born in December 1919 in Salzburg as the eldest of nine children of Friedrich Mayr Melnhof (1892-1956, until April 1919 Freiherr Mayr von Melnhof) and his wife Maria-Anna (1897-1983), a born countess of Meran from a morganatic branch of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen , born. Her father was a large landowner in the province of Salzburg. As a great, great, great granddaughter , she is a direct descendant of Empress Maria Theresa through her mother . One of her siblings is the politician, farmer and forester Friedrich Mayr-Melnhof (1924–2020).

She took her first photos at the age of nine. After attending school and graduating from high school in 1938, she studied at the Blocherer Art School in Munich in 1941 . In March 1942 she married Ludwig Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn (1915–1962), then a lieutenant in a reconnaissance department whom she had met in Munich with her host parents.

When her husband was "run over by a drunk truck driver in Sayn near Koblenz on the sidewalk in front of her house" and died in 1962 , she and a guardian took over the administration in Sayn until her son Alexander came of age.

She started a career as a professional photographer and archived around 300,000 of her photos by her 100th birthday in December 2019. She photographed celebrities from Maria Callas to Gianni Agnelli to Luciano Pavarotti and presented travel reports .

She was given the name "Mamarazza" based on the word " Paparazzo " as a nickname of Princess Caroline of Monaco , who once said to her: "Manni, you are a real Mamarazza." In contrast to paparazzi, however, she never shows indiscreet or derogatory Photos: "I always photographed my friends as friends."

From the 1970s to 2009, during and around the annual Salzburg Festival , she gave several “rural lunches” for 100 guests each in Fuschl am See near Salzburg, to which she has welcomed thousands of celebrities, including many artists performing at the festival , could welcome. Marianne Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn is a 20-time grandmother, 31-time great-grandmother and three-time great-great-grandmother (as of December 2019).

Awards

On July 27, 2010, Marianne Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn received the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria from the Federal Minister for Education, Art and Culture , Claudia Schmied , in the Salzburg Residence . The presentation speech was Landeshauptfrau -Stellvertreter Wilfried Haslauer .

Marianne Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn had numerous exhibitions, including a. in Berlin, Salzburg, Munich, Frankfurt, New York, Vienna and at Sayn Castle. The Sayn-Wittgenstein-Collection has been shown as a permanent exhibition in the Artmosphere Gallery in Salzburg since 2003 . a. with photographs of visits to Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali.
