biography

Maryja Schkanawa was born in Leningrad in 1989 . She lives in Minsk . At the age of 15 she competed in her first FIS races in Russia and stayed at this racing level for several winters. In March 2006 she took part in a Junior World Championship for the first time and finished 52nd in the Super-G, while she did not finish in her favorite disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. In two other JWM participations, a 37th place in the giant slalom ( Garmisch 2009 ) was her best result. She first took part in a world championship in 2009 in Val-d'Isère , where she again only qualified in the Super-G. In February 2010 she represented Belarus in Vancouver for the first time at the Winter Olympics .

On January 3, 2012 she started in the slalom of Zagreb for the first time in the World Cup . From then on, she regularly competed in races in the disciplines of slalom, giant slalom and super-G, and since 2016 she has concentrated on technical competitions. One month later she made her European Cup debut in Jasná's Super-G, and she has not been able to place in the top 15 to this day. Five years after her World Cup debut, she reached 23rd place in Zagreb at the beginning of January 2017, making her not only the first Belarusian to win World Cup points, but also the national best of Juryj Danilachkin (25th place in the super combination of Krasnaya Polyana in February 2012) outbid. At the beginning of February, at the Universiade in Almaty , she won the gold medal in slalom as well as silver in the combination and bronze in the giant slalom. At the World Championships in St. Moritz , she won both qualifying races for the technical competitions, but did not get past a 31st place in the slalom.
