Marina makes up Luciano is a painting by Franz Gertsch from 1975, it is one of his main works.

The 234 × 346 cm large photo-realistic painting, which belongs to the collection of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, shows a man and a woman. At first glance, it seems as if the woman is a man and vice versa (" travesty "), as she has combed her hair strictly backwards, which from the perspective of the beholder makes her appear as if she was wearing a man's haircut. The man, on the other hand, has more than shoulder-length hair, which he also wears open, and a distinction based on facial features is made impossible by the strong, very bright make-up (a lot of blush, blue eyebrows with ends tapering over the temples, bright red lips with her, as well as very intensely emphasized lips, extremely dark eyes, eyelashes extended with lines and black eyebrows with him). Marina wears a jacket whose pattern is very similar to the American flag with many stars in blue and white as well as stripes in red and white , and she bends over Luciano, who willingly holds his head out to her so that she can complete her "work" on him . The background offers a strong contrast . The "colors" are white and beige , the only really colored thing is the meandering pattern of the tiles in the right part of the picture .

The composition lines of the background run vertically: the outer line of the cabinet door, the tile joint, the pipe / pipe. With Marina and Luciano, however, the contours are mostly oblique, the head of Marina, which looks like an extension of the back line, the forearm, even the bent fingers of the hand applying the make-up, the line between Luciano's chin and hairline, which is an optical continuation of the forearm, all run parallel to each other and at right angles to the composition lines of the background.

The two people are Marina Sibbe and her boyfriend at the time, the artist Luciano Castelli , whom Gertsch often painted after Jean-Christophe Ammann introduced him to Lucerne bohemianism.

The photographs preceding the pictures are thrown on the wall with a projector and then painted over. What sets Franz Gertsch apart from colleagues who use similar processes is that he uses narrow brushes instead of a paint gun , so that his process is reminiscent of pointillism .

Period of origin and context

In 1969 Gertsch found Huaa ...! , which he accordingly referred to as work no. 1 , on his new method of working from photographic templates. Was Huaa ...! but it was based on a template that Gertsch found in a magazine, so he later worked with his own photos and motifs from family and friends. The basically banal subjects and snapshots are exaggerated by the large dimensions and the elaborate painting technique. Well-known works from this phase include Medici and the series about Luciano Castelli and his circle of friends, which Gertsch created between 1971 and 1977. These include B. also Gaby and Luciano and At Luciano's House (both from 1973), which like the painting Marina makes up Luciano from 1975 were painted with acrylic on unprimed cotton . The fact that Gertsch also paints “the paintedness of things” distinguishes him from other photo-realists and from artists like Gerhard Richter . Around 1978 Gertsch changed his preferred motifs and turned to the individual portrait ; this ended the phase to which Marina applied Luciano's make-up .

Through the Medici exhibition at documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 , Gertsch and his photorealistic paintings suddenly became internationally known. His painting Marina make-up Luciano , created in 1975, was now significant enough to be immediately included in the collection of the art historian couple Irene and Peter Ludwig , and has been on loan to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne since 1976 .
