Marmara is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . The city is located about 110 kilometers north of the center of Balikesir . Since a regional reform in 2012, the district town is identical in terms of area and population to the district.
The district consists of the islands of Marmara Adası , Türkeli Adası (also Avşa Adası ), Ekinlik Adası (also Kaşık Adası ) and Hayırsız Adası. They are located in the north of the province, northwest of the Kapıdağı Yarımadası peninsula , which corresponds to the district of Erdek , in the Sea of Marmara .
In the north of the island, near Saraylar, are the quarries in which the white Prokonnesian marble , which was famous in antiquity, is mined, from which the Pergamon Altar is made, among other things . The name comes from the Greek name Prokonnesos for the island. An open-air marble museum can be visited in Saraylar.
