The Marstein near Frankenhain in the North Hessian Werra-Meißner district is 320.9 m above sea level. NHN high elevation of the Lower Werrabergland . To distinguish it from the nearby Kleiner Marstein , the main summit is also called Großer Marstein . Both elevations are crowned by a dolomite rock and are designated as natural monuments .

The Marstein is located in the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) , 1.2 km northeast of the village of Frankenhain , a part of the Berkatal municipality , and belongs to the Frankenhain district . Around 200 m south of the (Großer) Marstein , in the transition area to the Käseberg ( 317.4 m ), there is the Kleiner Marstein ( ⊙ ) rock , and around 450 and 700 m to the east are the karst springs Kressenborn and Breitenborn .
Natural allocation
The Marstein belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Lower Werrabergland (358) and in the subunit Unterwerrasattel (358.0) to the karst landscape of the natural area Meißnervorland (358.03).
Protected areas
About 1 km east-northeast of the Marstein lies the northeast part of the Kripp- and Hielöcher nature reserve ( CDDA no. 164260; designated in 1967; 17 hectares in size), the southwest part of which is around 600 m south-southeast on the Käseberg. Parts of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Meißner and Meißner-Vorland (FFH No. 4725-306; 20.42 km² ) are located on the Marstein .
