Martha Schuster (born March 27, 1948 in Dorn-Dürkheim ) is a German organist , harpsichordist , church musician and university teacher .

Career

Martha Schuster received her first organ lessons from Diethard Hellmann , a student of Günther Ramin , in Mainz . She studied church music at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt am Main with Helmut Walcha (organ) and Kurt Hessenberg (composition and composition). After passing the A-exam , she obtained the concert qualification in the master class of Helmut Walcha. As part of the Summer Academy for Organists in Haarlem, she completed her training with Marie-Claire Alain , Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini and Hans Haselböck .

From 1968 to 1990 Martha Schuster was organist at the Gedächtniskirche and at the Markus and Stiftskirche in Stuttgart. In 1982 she was awarded the title of Church Music Director.

During the complete recording of the Bach cantatas with the Gächinger Kantorei under Helmuth Rilling, Schuster worked regularly as a harpsichordist from 1970 to 1977. She also made numerous recordings for radio stations at home and abroad. As a soloist and accompanist, she has given concerts in Europe, the USA, Mexico and Japan. CD recordings were made for the Organum Classics label as well as television productions for ARD, ZDF and SWR, among others.

Martha Schuster worked as a committed teacher at several music academies. From 1981 to 2010 she had a teaching position at the University of Music and Theater in Munich (1994 honorary professorship) as well as other teaching positions at the University of Music Saar in Saarbrücken (1984 to 1987) and from 1996 to 2017 at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart . Her students include Georg Oberauer and Roland Dopfer .

  • 1968: 1st prize at the International Organ Week competition (Edwin Fischer Prize) in Nuremberg
  • 1971: Award at the competition of the German broadcasting corporations (ARD) in Munich
