Martin Lersch (a grandson of the working-class poet Heinrich Lersch ) studied design at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld from 1971 to 1973 and then studied illustration at the Folkwang School in Essen until 1976 . He has received several grants (for example, in 1980 from the Franco-German Youth Office , in 1986 a creativity grant from the Pays de la Loire regional council and in 2006 tower grant in Geldern). Lersch lived again and again for long periods of time in France and, in addition to his work as a draftsman, illustrator and painter, was also active in the areas of stage design, book production and music performance (clarinet, guitar, electronic instruments and children's toys). Lersch has long carried out art and music projects in libraries, museums, prisons and with French and German school classes, e. B. together with the mezzo-soprano Gesine van der Grinten at the Ensemblia 2007. From 1994 to 2007 he worked at the annual magazine for literature and graphics, Muschelhaufen, published by Erik Martin .

The married Martin Lersch lives and works in Goch .

Quote

“The overarching feature of Martin Lersch's exhibitions is his targeted recourse to the inexhaustible stock of images from art history, which he allows narrative to flow into his work. Either based on the originals or through reproductions of the works of art, as they are countless in the form of postcards, catalogs, calendar sheets, etc., the artist develops independent works in painting, drawing and occasionally collage that are not created as copies. Rather, Martin Lersch orients himself on the meaningful details of the templates, such as hands, houses, animals, figures of saints, musical instruments, etc., which he traces and colors with practiced strokes in order to then bundle them according to topic.
