Martina Monika Willing (born October 3, 1959 in Pasewalk , Neubrandenburg district , GDR ) is a German athlete who competes in the javelin , discus and shot put . Until 1994 she was in the starting class F11 , then in F56 . Willing is a multiple Paralympic winner, multiple world champion and European champion and has set numerous world records .

Life

Private

Willing has had a visual disorder since she was born . She became completely blind at the age of 21 . At the 1994 Winter Paralympics in Lillehammer , Norway , she fell in the final cross-country individual race and had to undergo knee surgery for treatment . Bleeding in the spinal cord triggered by the anesthetic injection led to paraplegia .

Martina Willing worked as a bioenergetic specialist, is retired and lives in Brandenburg an der Havel .

Sports career

In 1981, Willing found his way into disabled sports - at that time still in the classifications C4 and F11 -, started internationally for the GDR in 1985 and won her first Paralympic medal eleven years later in Barcelona . In 1992 in Barcelona she secured the javelin title and set a world record. It took her almost a year to psychologically cope with her accident and the additional handicap from 1994 onwards. However, she managed to continue her sporting successes. So she was able to win the gold medal in the javelin throw again at the following Paralympics in Atlanta in 1996 - in her new class F56 she was the only blind athlete in the competition. Numerous medals followed, including a Paralympic title in the javelin throw in Beijing in 2008 and other summer Paralympics. Also at the IPC World and European Championships , Willing has been one of the best in their three disciplines since 1998.

In addition, she also returned to winter sports, where she drives sit-down skis (ski sledges) with a companion.

At the Paralympics 2016 she won the silver medal in the javelin throw. For this she received the silver bay leaf on November 1, 2016.

In 2017 she won bronze in the javelin throw at the IPC World Championships in London .

In 2018 Willing won silver with a ball, discus and spear at the IPC European Championships in Berlin .

Club affiliations

Willing has been working for the Brandenburg Prevention and Rehabilitation Sports Association (BPRSV) in Cottbus since 2013 and was previously at SC Potsdam . Willing trained for many years at SG Stahl Brandenburg , where she is an honorary member.
