Math42 was an app developed in Germany that is used to solve math problems. The program was available for the Android and iOS operating systems and in English , Chinese , German , French , Spanish and Russian . It was primarily aimed at schoolchildren (including doing homework and studying at home) and teachers, and enabled publishers to improve existing products and develop new ones. The name is made up of the English word "math" for mathematics and the number 42 , which Douglas Adam's book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy claims is the answer to everything. In 2017, the app was sold to the US company Chegg and replaced by the Chegg Math Solver app in 2019 .
functionality
The tasks could be entered and recorded with a keyboard displayed on the screen. After the invoice was entered, proposed solutions were displayed, which could be opened and closed step by step. You could display more detailed mathematical explanations and graphical representations of functions, as well as practice exercises to check your level of knowledge.
The functions included:

technology
Math42 was a symbolic computer algebra system (CAS for short). The graphical user interface and input were implemented using HTML5 , JavaScript , the React Framework and TeX . The mathematical core was implemented with Swift for iOS and the AWS backend for Android.
history
The developers Maxim and Raphael Nitsche were 14 and 15 years old when they were under-challenged with school mathematics and gave other students tutoring . They noticed that many questions were repeated. They were looking for ways to automate this process and thus save users tuition costs. In 2013, the brothers had the idea of developing a math tutoring app. Her father Thomas Nitsche had already programmed chess computers and was involved in software development. His sons convinced him to write the app.
In 2015, the brothers appeared with their app on the TV show Die Höhle der Löwen , which received a lot of media attention. They demanded two million euros for 20 percent of the company; this was the highest purchase price in the show to date. The investor Frank Thelen predicted a market value of 100 million euros and made a comparison with Mark Zuckerberg . Nevertheless, there was no further cooperation or investment, partly because the father was the managing director .
In 2017, the app was sold to the US education provider Chegg for 12 million euros .
The brothers gave up their math studies to work on the app.
On December 30, 2019, the app was discontinued and replaced by Chegg Math Solver .
