The Mathias and Charlotte-Jäde-Stift (mostly just called Jäde-Stift ) was a senior citizens' home in Bad Schwartau ( Schleswig-Holstein ) supported by the Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Foundation ( Matthias and Charlotte Jäde Foundation ).

The Jäde-Stift, set up and operated on the basis of a foundation, was a unique institution in the Principality of Lübeck , from 1937 in the Eutin district and from 1970 in the Ostholstein district .

With the establishment of apartments with kitchens in order to enable the residents to self-suffice, the Jäde-Stift was an early form of a facility that made assisted living possible.

The foundation stone for the "Mathias and Charlotte-Jäde-Stift" was laid on May 10, 1909.

building

A two-storey, plastered brick building with two gables and a mansard roof covered with red roof tiles with numerous dormers was erected . The facade of the building has numerous with shutters fitted window and the pillared porch , several bay windows , cornices and Art Nouveau elements intricately designed.

There were 20 two-room and seven one-room apartments in the building, each with its own kitchen, the necessary sanitary facilities, utility rooms and a prayer room .

1910 to 1945

After less than a year of construction, the Art Nouveau style building (for 300,000 marks ) was completed and was inaugurated on March 30, 1910.

The pen immediately enjoyed great popularity.

1945 to 1959

On July 1st, by order of the British Military Government, the Jäde-Stift building was rededicated by the District Administrator in Eutin as a makeshift hospital with 100 beds. As a result, only the second floor could be used as a retirement home.

On June 30, 1959, the makeshift hospital was closed.

1960 to 1997

After the temporary hospital was closed, the building was converted into a nursing home with 66 places and reopened on February 1, 1960.

An annex was built between August 1966 and July 1967, increasing the number of seats by 14.

In 1997 an examination of the building revealed deficiencies in terms of fire safety. This initially meant that the second floor had to be cleared. This made old people's homes uneconomical. This led to the end of the operation as a retirement home and the dissolution of the Jäde-Stift and the residents move in June 1997.

From 1997 until today

The building was sold by the Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Foundation after the Jäde Foundation was dissolved.

The building of the "Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Stift" (the inscription above the portal has been preserved) is now used as an office building. A notary and law firm has been located here since 1999.

Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Foundation

Gustav Jädes’s letter of honorary citizenship issued in 1910

The foundation of the establishment of the Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Foundation was the establishment of the "Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Foundation" by Gustav Jäde (born April 20, 1850 in Schwartau ); † 24 July 1913 in Lübeck - businessman and member of the Lübeck citizenship - which he 1910 the honorary citizenship of the spot municipality received Schwartau.

In 1908 Gustav Jäde decided to set up a foundation for the Schwartau citizens.

The establishment of the foundation was approved on February 10, 1909 by the government of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg (to which Schwartauer - in what was then the Principality of Lübeck - belonged).

Foundation purpose

The purpose of the foundation was to provide Schwartau citizens who had lived there for at least ten years or came from families who had lived there for at least ten years, with good repute and of respectable standing , a place of residence for the last years of their lives .

The foundation today

Today the foundation supports needy citizens of Bad Schwartau from the proceeds of the foundation's assets.

Board

The board of directors resigned itself according to the statutes of 1909

In 1972 the statutes were adapted to the changed legal requirements, whereby the membership was canceled by virtue of office.

Foundation assets

The foundation's assets included the "Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Stift", other real estate and financial assets. After the death of Gustav Jädes in 1913, the foundation received additional financial assets in a will.

Due to the inflation of 1923, the foundation lost its financial assets, so that the property had to be gradually sold.

As a result of the conversion of the Jäde-Stift from a retirement home to a retirement home in 1960 - to which later the services of a nursing home were added - the foundation received financial support and contributions from the city of Bad Schwartau, the Eutin district, the church and other institutions.

After the sale of the "Mathias and Charlotte Jäde Stift" building in 1997, the foundation received the proceeds from the sale.

Others

The building stands as a monument under monument protection and is one of the most important buildings in Bad Schwartau.
