Matija is an alternative pop band from Munich , founded in 2011 , which was active under the name The Capitols until 2016 . Their music shows influences from different genres, u. a. Pop , indie rock , hip hop and alternative .

history

The band was founded in Munich in early 2011 by Matt Kovac (vocals, guitar, recorder), Johann Blake (bass, synthesizer, backing vocals), Jan Salgovic (guitar, keyboard) and Sami Salman (drums, percussion). The four band members got to know each other in a school band at the Maximiliansgymnasium . Songs like Inhale Exhale and Wake Up were created under the name "The Capitols" used at the time . In addition to sold-out club shows, the musicians played at festivals such as the Oben ohne Open Air and the “Škisova tržnica”. This was followed by support shows for international acts such as The 1975 , Kensington, Catfish and the Bottlemen , Wanda , The Computers and Swim Deep.

Name change

In 2016, the Hamburg producer Johann Scheerer became aware of the quartet and signed the musicians on his Clouds Hill label, whereupon the band decided to rename the project "Matija", after the singer's real first name. Soon after, recording began for the debut album Are We an Electric Generation Falling Apart? , which appeared on Indigo on October 20, 2017. On October 16, 2020, the Munich indie band's 2nd album " byebyeskiesofyesterday " will be released via the Hamburg label Clouds Hill .

Line-up change and second album

Since Johann Blake left in 2019, the remaining members have been working as a trio. In 2020 they released the singles absolutelynothing (today) , troiskilometres and saddaysinthecity , which are taken from their second album byebyeskiesofyesterday . This is to be published in autumn 2020 and was created in cooperation with the Munich music producer Willy Löster. Jan Salgovic, mainly guitarist and keyboardist of the band, made his debut as a co-producer of some of the tracks.

style

The music combines electric guitars and various keyboard instruments such as piano and synthesizer with catchy song structures, the use of the baroque recorder and influences from classical and electronic music . Matija names artists such as Foals , Kasabian , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Radiohead , Benjamin Clementine , Tame Impala and The Mars Volta as musical influences .
