Johann Wilhelm Karl Jakob Scheerer (born November 6, 1982 in Henstedt-Ulzburg ) is a musician and music producer from Hamburg . He became known through productions for bands like  Bosnian Rainbows , At the Drive-In , Pete Doherty , Faust , Stella and 1000 Robota .

Career

Johann Scheerer was born as the son of Ann-Kathrin Scheerer and Jan Philipp Reemtsma , grew up in Hamburg and attended the Christianeum until he graduated from high school.

At the age of 16 he won a talent competition with the school band “Am kahlen Aste”, the prize of which was a meeting with the then successful music producer Berman Brothers ( Caught in the Act , Hanson ). This was followed by a record deal with Epic / Sony and the release of three singles and an album under the band name Score! . However, the success fell short of the expectations of the record company. After the contract was terminated, the band broke up about two years later.

Without a contract, Johann Scheerer began to record the band himself. This was followed by the establishment of the recording studio “RekordBox” in two building containers standing one on top of the other on an occupied space in the garden art network on Eifflerstraße in Hamburg.

In 2004 he and Henning Schmidt (Plemo) moved into the Phonraum recording studio in the former Taz building on Chemnitzstrasse. After several smaller and demo productions, the collaboration with Henning Schmidt fell apart. In 2006 he and Thies Mynther opened the completely analog recording studio Clouds Hill Recordings in Hamburg. National and international productions followed. In 2008 Chris von Rautenkranz joined the Clouds Hill Recordings rooms with the Soundgarden Mastering .

Scheerer launched the Taka-Takaz project later in 2008 . Twelve songs written by him were performed with the musicians Omar Rodriguez Lopez ( At the Drive-In , The Mars Volta ), Marco Haas ( T. Raumschmiere ), Jessica Drosten ( Das Bierbeben ), Thies Mynther (Phantom / Ghost, Stella ), Bubi Blacksmith ( Zed Yago ), Mense Reents ( Die Vögel , Stella ), Sebastian Nagel (Mocambo / The Ape) and Albrecht Schrader set to music and published as 2 10 ″ EPs Leslie White and Leslie Black .

In 2009 Scheerer founded the 7 ″ label Clouds Hill Ltd. together with his band colleague Sebastian Nagel . , which was initially recorded in the studio of the same name and published limited to 500 pieces 7 ″ singles. After the releases of the albums Fukui by the Hamburg band Stella and Beauty by the Freiburg band Kraków Loves Adana , the label also established itself with 10 ″ EPs and 12 ″ long players.

In 2010 Scheerer switched to Clouds Hill Ltd. to the international distributor Roughtrade Distribution . In autumn 2010 the band Stella reached number 7 in the German club charts (DCC) with the Remix 12 ″ "Office & Store".

The 2012 … live at Clouds Hill vinyl box contains seven artists who played a concert at Clouds Hill Recordings, including Faust & Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Gallon Drunk, Bosnian Rainbows, The Ape and Léonore Boulanger.

In 2012 he produced, among other things, the debut album by Berlin artist ALLIE and the first album by Rodriguez Lopez's new band Bosnian Rainbows , which was released in May 2013 by Clouds Hill. In 2014 he met Pete Doherty , who asked him to produce his solo album. "That guy saved my life," Doherty said shortly thereafter. Scheerer was nominated for the Hamburg music award "Hans" for the solo album Dohertys, which he produced and which was released in 2016 . In 2016 Scheerer's Clouds Hill label released a limited 12 "single with an exclusive song each by Peter Doherty and James Johnston for Record Store Day 2016.

In 2017 Scheerer started a cooperation with his label Clouds Hill and Warner Music Central Europe to develop young talent. The cooperation includes that established artists use the professional infrastructure of the Hamburg major.

On March 1, 2018, Johann Scheerer published the autobiographical book We are then probably the relatives. The story of a kidnapping . The book entered the Spiegel bestseller list in its first week of sales and was nominated for the 2018 aspekte literature award. The audio book is nominated for the German audio book award.

philosophy

Scheerer strives for a sound far removed from the mainstream in his productions, which range from pop to indie to avant-garde sound experiments. He ponders: “What mood, color, depth do I want to create? As a listener, what kind of room would I like to see in front of me? ”His goal is to trigger emotions without serving aesthetic expectations.
