Matthew Rowley (born June 4, 1993 in Red Deer ) is a Canadian ski jumper .

Career

Rowley, who starts for the Altius Nordic Ski Club, started ski jumping at the national level when he was eight. He made his international debut as part of the FIS Cup on his home hill, the Whistler Olympic Park Ski Jumps in Whistler, in February 2008. He immediately won 23rd place. After he was able to win points in the second competition, he reached 237th place in the FIS Cup overall ranking 2007/08. At the Canadian Ski Jumping Championships 2009 in Whistler, he won bronze in individual jumping. In the summer of 2009, Rowley clearly missed the points in Predazzo and Oberwiesenthal .

After a two-year break from international competitions, Rowley started again in Gérardmer in the FIS Cup, where he jumped to 17th place. Two days later he made his debut in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup in Courchevel . After he was unsuccessful there in both competitions, however, he switched back to the FIS Cup, where he again took a longer break from competition after two unsuccessful competitions in Szczyrk .

In January 2012 Rowley was called back to the Continental Cup squad after two good results at FIS jumping in Whistler. Until the end of the season, however, he remained without a single point win. At the Canadian Ski Jumping Championships 2012 in Whistler, Rowley won bronze twice on the normal and large hill. At the summer jumping competition on the Bauhenk in Kranj , Rowley was 30th and for the first time achieved points in the Continental Cup. Despite this personal best, he started again in the FIS Cup in the Villach Alpine Arena in Villach , before moving to the Ski Jumping Grand Prix in August . At the team competition on the Tremplin du Praz in Courchevel he reached rank 13 with the team. After qualifying a few days later for the individual competition on the Rothaus-Schanze in Hinterzarten , he only achieved a position on the same hill with the team as fourth just behind the podium. In the individual competition Rowley jumped to 29th place. With the two points he won, he was 82nd in the overall Grand Prix for the 2012 season .

On November 23, 2012 he started to qualify for jumping in the Ski Jumping World Cup on Lysgårds-Schanze in Lillehammer . He could not qualify as 55th and only started as part of the team together with Alexandra Pretorius , Taylor Henrich and MacKenzie Boyd-Clowes in the mixed team competition, where they could only reach the last place with rank 13. After Rowley also missed qualifying in Kuusamo , he switched back to the Continental Cup.

In February 2013 Rowley managed to score again after a long time in Iron Mountain . However, it remained his only success until the end of the season. In the end, he reached rank 183 overall. At the Canadian Ski Jumping Championships in 2013 , which took place shortly afterwards , he won the silver medal on the large hill after finishing fifth on the normal hill.

In 2014 Rowley took part in the Winter Olympics in Sochi . On the normal hill he finished 41st in qualification and missed the main round by one place. On the large hill he reached the 38th place in the qualification and thus qualified for the main round. Here he was disqualified by the jury after his first jump because of incorrect clothing.

Rowley lives in Calgary .
