Matthias Baumann (born July 7, 1971 in Stuttgart ) is a German trauma surgeon , sports medicine specialist and expedition doctor .

Professional background

Matthias Baumann attended the Friedrich-Eugens-Gymnasium Stuttgart . After graduating from high school, he studied medicine in Tübingen , Montpellier , at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and in Cape Town between 1992 and 2000 . He made the specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery. Since 2015 he has been working as a senior physician at the Accident Clinic in Tübingen . Since 2013 he has also been the head association doctor of the Federation of German Cyclists (as of 2019) and was the medical supervisor of the German team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Expeditions and humanitarian aid

As a mountaineer and expedition doctor, Matthias Baumann undertook numerous tours in the Alps , the Andes and the Himalayas , for example on the Mont Blanc , the Aconcagua , the Muztagata and the Cho Oyu . In 2011 and 2014 he accompanied a Mount Everest expedition as a doctor, reaching an altitude of 8,650 meters.

During the Mount Everest expedition in 2014, he was an eyewitness to the avalanche disaster in the Khumbu Icefall, in which 16 Sherpas were killed. He organized medical care for the injured in Everest Base Camp. After the avalanche disaster on Mount Everest, Baumann visited the women and children of the deceased Sherpas in the Everest area.

In April 2015 Matthias Baumann traveled to Nepal after the earthquake there and provided disaster relief as a trauma surgeon. To support the mountain population of Nepal he founded the “Sherpa Nepalhilfe eV”. Nepalhilfe finances the schooling of 40 half-orphans from the avalanche disaster. After the earthquake, three schools and a community hall were rebuilt. The largest project is the Himalayan Sherpa Hospital in the Everest region. The shell is finished and the hospital will start operating in 2020. His commitment was recognized by the event organizers in December 2019 when the athlete of the year was honored in Baden-Baden , and he received a page in the yearbook dedicated to his work in Nepal.
