Matthias Creutziger

Matthias Creutziger (* 1951 in Härtensdorf ) is a German photographer who works primarily in the fields of jazz , classical music , theater and the visual arts .

Live and act

After finishing school, Creutziger completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and in 1970 completed his Abitur at the adult education center in Zwickau . This was followed by a degree in structural engineering in Cottbus and Dresden and then until 1983 working as a project engineer in Dresden.

Creutziger came into contact with music at an early age and founded a band while at school; Between 1967 and 1977 he played drums in various rock and blues bands . In 1976 Creutziger published his first article on jazz in the newspaper Die Union . Further contributions followed; From 1979 the first photos of jazz concerts were taken. As a photographer he is self-taught . From 1983 Creutziger worked as a freelance photographer and was editor of the GDR jazz calendar from 1982 to 1984. In the mid-1980s, Creutziger discovered opera photography through the “Arbeitsgruppe Theaterplakat”, a free artist group belonging to the Dresden State Theater, and also worked for the Dresden Philharmonic and the Staatskapelle Dresden .

In 1988 Creutziger left the GDR with his family and initially settled in Hanover . Between 1989 and 1991 he was jazz advisor to the Lower Saxony State Music Council . In 1989 he was appointed to the German Society for Photography .

From 1990 Creutziger lived in Mutterstadt and worked for the Schwetzingen Festival and the Heidelberg City Theater , among others . He was also active as a jazz critic and organizer of concerts, particularly in Dresden and Ludwigshafen. Between 1992 and 2008 he worked as a house photographer for the Dresden Center for Contemporary Music , from 1994 to 2004 he was the house photographer of the Theater im Pfalzbau (Ludwigshafen) and from 2003 to 2015 he was a theater photographer at the Semperoper in Dresden. Since then, Creutziger, who has lived in Dresden since 2003, has been working as a freelance photographer, primarily for the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden; since 2004 he has also been the in-house photographer of the Tonne jazz club . Creutziger is occasionally also active as a journalist, for example for the daily newspaper Dresdner Latest Nachrichten and the magazine Sax .

Since the 1980s, Creutziger has also exhibited his photographs outside of Germany in solo and group exhibitions, for example the Jazz Photography 1998 exhibition in Ljubljana . Among other things, he was with photos at the traveling exhibition Freejazz in the GDR. World level involved in the surveillance state of the Federal Agency for Civic Education on Jazz in the GDR, which was shown in various cities in Germany from 2013 to 2014. Creutziger presented several illustrated books with his own jazz photos; he was also able to contribute photographs to numerous books. From the 1980s onwards, there was an intensive collaboration with the graphic artist Jürgen Haufe , who used Creutziger's photographs "collaged, painted over, fragmented" as the basis for music posters. Haufe died in 1999; the exhibition Fascination Jazz. Photo works by Creutziger can be found in the collections of the Kupferstichkabinette Dresden , Leipzig and Berlin , the Staatliche Museen Berlin and Chemnitz, the Deutsche Fotothek Dresden , the Kestnergesellschaft Hannover, the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt and the Lippmann + Rau Music Archive Eisenach .

In 2000, Creutziger was awarded the first prize by the Society for Photography for his portrait photography Seven Steps to the Universe: The jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani was awarded the first prize at the 5th portrait photo show in Germany . In 2018 his Cuba calendar received Que bolá Cuba? a Gregor Photo Calendar Award . In March 2019, Creutziger won a bronze medal at the Japan Award and the Gregor Calendar Award in bronze for his Souks Inside calendar on markets in Morocco. For the Macropolis 2020 calendar - Time does not exist , Creutziger was awarded the Gregor Calendar Award Grand Prix in January 2020 .

At the beginning of April 2020, Creutziger fell seriously ill with COVID-19 . He was in a coma for almost five weeks.
