Matti Klein

Matti Klein (born March 6, 1984 in Berlin ) is a German jazz pianist . As part of the jazz radio band Mo 'Blow and founder of the Matti Klein Soul Trio , he plays the piano , Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer, among others .

biography

Klein began playing the piano at the age of ten. He completed a classical music education at the Demmin Music High School. He then studied jazz piano at the Berlin University of the Arts with Wolfgang Köhler , Rolf Zielke and Hubert Nuss . He was a member of the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Nils Landgren , with whom he recorded the CD Berlin - Los Angeles 2005 .

As a soloist and sideman, Klein played with musicians such as Ack van Rooyen and Gunter Hampel, among others . Since 2013 he has been musical director and keyboard player for international concerts by the Brazilian soul jazz musician Ed Motta . For the Scottish disco-pop singer Jimmy Somerville ( Bronski Beat , The Communards ) he was keyboardist and musical director of the ten-piece band on his first solo tour "Freedom to Dance". Klein then produced a live album for this tour.

Klein played in jazz clubs such as the Blue Note in Tokyo, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London, New Morning (Paris) and the Highline Ballroom (New York City). He has performed various projects at international jazz festivals such as the Leverkusener Jazztage , the Borneo Jazz Festival (Malaysia) and the World Forum on Music (Los Angeles). Furthermore, Klein can be heard as a keyboardist and / or arranger on publications by Edward Maclean ( Me & You ), DePhazz ( Garage Pompeuse ) and Herbert Grönemeyer ( Schiffsverkehr ).

As musical director and vocal coach, Klein was responsible for the selection and musical rehearsal of stage actors, bands and pianists as well as the production of the show soundtracks for the Mein Schiff fleet. In the 2011/2012 winter semester he was given the teaching assignment to lead the big band of the jazz institute of the Hanns Eisler University of Music and the Berlin University of the Arts .

Projects

With the jazz radio band Mo 'Blow , Klein performed on around 300 national and international tours from 2007 until their dissolution in 2016. With Lars Zander ( saxophone , bass clarinet ) and André Seidel ( drums ), Klein (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer) is active in the soul-jazz project Matti Klein Soul Trio .
