Mauro Negri

Mauro Negri (* 1966 in Mantua ) is an Italian jazz musician ( clarinet , saxophone , composition ).

Live and act

Negri received classical instrumental training from Giovanni Bertolini. During his academic studies he gave concerts with the pianist Marino Nicolini in a duo and other chamber music ensembles.

In 1987 Negri took part in a tour of Russia with the Florence Jazz Orchestra . In 1989 he recorded his first album Patarau with Franco D'Andrea for Splasch Records . With his second quartet Trapezomantilo , which is unusually (with clarinet, cello, guitar and drums), several albums have been made since 1991. He then recorded a record as a soloist for the Sentemo label and founded a trio with the guitarist Sandro Gibellini and the pianist Paolo Birro .

In 1996 he founded the Mauro Negri SF Group , with which he recorded an album for Splasc (h) Records called So Funky and began working with Enrico Rava . The quartet has performed at numerous Italian festivals. Furthermore, Negri belonged to the groups of Aldo Romano , with whom he gave international concerts and recorded several albums. In 1998 he accompanied Enrico Rava, Giovanni Tommaso , Gato Barbieri and Jimmy Cobb in the Della Scala Academic Orchestra . In 2005 he worked with the Vienna Art Orchestra . He is currently a member of two formations with French accordionist Richard Galliano , Homage to Nino Rota and New Tangaria .

He also performed with Kenny Wheeler , Billy Cobham , Albert Mangelsdorff , Lee Konitz , Sal Nistico , Tony Scott , Steve Lacy , Paul Jeffrey , Stefano Bollani , Tommy Turrentine , Manfred Schoof , Kim Clarke , Marc Abrams , Natalie Cole , Paolo Fresu , Furio Di Castri , Paolo Pellegatti, Enrico Intra , Tullio De Piscopo , Giorgio Gaslini and Franco Cerri . He can also be heard on albums by Enrico Rava, Claudio Fasoli , Ares Tavolazzi , the Lydian Sound Orchestra and the album Sulla tua bocca lo dirò by the Italian singer Mina . He accompanied Eros Ramazzotti and Edoardo Bennato on their world tours and since 1988 has participated as a saxophonist and clarinetist in all of Adriano Celentano's Italian television programs .

Since 2006 he has been teaching at the professorship for jazz composition at the Conservatory in Mantua. In the following year he published the textbook Master in clarinetto jazz with BMG Ricordi .

Prizes and awards

In 1984, at the age of 18, Negri came second in the RAI competition for the first saxophone in Milan. In 1985 he was named “best musician overall” in the national competition Viva i Giovani ; in the same year he won first prize in the national competition for saxophonists by Agliani d'Asti and was subsequently named “best talent” by Fare Musica magazine . In 1990 he was a finalist in the European competition at the Leverkusener Jazz Days . In 1991 he won the jazz contest with his new quartet Trapezomantilo . In 1992 he won the Top Jazz award for “the best Italian talent” and in 1993 he was voted “best new Italian talent” by the specialist magazine Musica Jazz .
