The Max-Planck-Gymnasium ( MPG for short ) is a general education high school in Heidenheim an der Brenz in eastern Baden-Württemberg .

history

On June 14, 1966, the Heidenheim municipal council submitted an application for an independent Progymnasium , as the previously outsourced classes at the Hellenstein Gymnasium could no longer be run in the previous way. The municipal council's application was granted on February 21, 1968. The name was chosen not only for its connection with the natural sciences but also for its relationship with the humanities. In the summer of 1971 they moved into the vacant rooms of the Albert Schweitzer Realschule on Galgenberg. The MPG was now a full institution and in the spring of 1972 the first Abitur took place. The five pavilions, which were originally planned for a primary school, were needed to accommodate the meanwhile 16 classes, consisting of 497 students and a 22-person college. Although these were only intended provisionally, they proved to be very durable.

In order to avoid one-sidedness, the MPG also concentrated on sport from the start. The gym was built in 1972. However, this was not yet in a sufficient condition for physical education and so parents and teachers supported the construction of an outdoor sports facility, which was put into operation in 1980. In 1995 the structural development of the MPG was completed. Only one pavilion remained for the fencers. But his days were numbered too, as today's fencing center was already being planned to finally remedy the poor training conditions of the high-performance center.

Profiles

The following high school profiles are offered at the Max Planck Gymnasium:

  • the scientific profile with NwT as a core subject from grade 8
  • the linguistic profile with Latin as a core subject from grade 8
  • the sports profile with Latin as a core subject from grade 8
Since 1999/2000, the Max Planck Gymnasium has been the only high school in the region to offer a bilingual course for linguistically interested and talented students who are gradually being taught in English in the subjects of biology, geography and history. The MPG has been a partner school for Europe since 2001 . In the same year the school was certified as a MINT center, which means in-depth training in mathematics and the natural sciences. From 1979 to 2000, the headmaster Spielkamp campaigned for pupils to have another choice. In 2007, the MPG's language profile was supplemented with its own linguistic feature. If you choose the language profile, you will receive classes in Latin in addition to the foreign language subjects English and French. On February 19, 2016, the Max-Planck-Gymnasium was honored as an elite school of football , with which football talents in Heidenheim can be better promoted. In addition, the MPG operates as a partner school for sports.

Student engineer academy

In 1999, the MPG teacher Marianne Gerny and her husband as well as Herbert Bauer ( FH Aalen ) and Klaus Wolf ( Voith ) founded the Student Engineering Academy (SIA). Marianne Gerny received the Federal Cross of Merit for this in 2010 . SIA was introduced across the board in Baden-Württemberg. The model not only promotes students interested in science and technology, but also opens up new professional future prospects in the field of engineering.

School partnerships and exchange programs

The high school has partner programs with schools in these cities:

Every year since 1976 there has been an exchange between France and Dinan. Here, the ninth grade students have the opportunity to get to know France and its language better for two weeks. In 1984 the USA exchange was added. A three-week exchange gives tenth grade students the chance to attend Grove City High School and explore the state of Ohio.
