Maximilian "Max" Klaas (born June 15, 1993 in Hagen , Germany ) is a German musician and percussionist .

Career

From 1999 to 2005 Max Klaas took drum lessons at the music school in his hometown of North Rhine-Westphalia, Wetter . At the end of 2005 his musical talent was discovered by the Moroccan percussionist Rhani Krija , who lived in Cologne and who became his musical mentor and taught him percussion . In addition, Klaas received musical support from Roland Peil from Cologne and the British percussionist Pete Lockett ( Rhythm Magazine : Best Live Percussionist 2005 ). The latter had worked as a lecturer at a drum kit and percussion seminar in 2006 at the Bavarian Music Academy in Marktoberdorf and became aware of the then 13-year-old participant Max Klaas. Klaas was then invited by Lockett to private lessons in London and trained by him in particular in tabla playing.

Since the beginning of 2006, Klaas has had numerous public appearances as a percussionist and has played in concerts in various bands. In April 2006 he appeared on television for the first time and was seen on ProSieben in the TV show series TV total moderated by Stefan Raab . In May 2006 the magazine drums & percussion published a report on Klaas. In 2007 he played as a percussionist, among other things, on the recordings of the CD production Codera's Chill-in Zone by clarinetist and saxophonist Wolf Codera .

The WDR Big Band Cologne , with which Klaas had three appearances

The German drum magazine Sticks published an article on Max Klaas in the September 2008 issue. In November 2008, Klaas received an invitation to a cajón festival in Hamburg.

Klaas qualified for membership in the Federal Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) in a nationwide competition and has been participating in the orchestra's work phases since summer 2008. The 42nd working phase of BuJazzO ( Stan Kenton Revisited ) was led by Jiggs Whigham and took place in September 2008 at the Rheinsberg Music Academy . In the 43rd work phase ( BuJazzO meets India ) in March 2009 under the direction of Mike Herting at the Federal Academy for Musical Youth Education in Trossingen , he was taught percussion by TAS Mani and Ramesh Shotham, among others , and performed at the final concert with the Indian singer RA Ramamani up.

In 2009, an interview with Klaas appeared in Xound Magazine (January issue ) and, in addition to other appearances in Codera's Session Possible project, he had several live performances, such as concerts with the Jazz Trio in Düsseldorf and the Schäl Sick Brass Band in Mülheim at the Ruhr, at the Funkhaus Europa Party 2009 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the radio program Funkhaus Europa of the WDR in May 2009, at a project by the percussion lecturer José J. Cortijo from the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim , at the percussion sounds at Schloss Ellwangen and at 4th Bruges Music Festival in Bruges, Schleswig-Holstein.

Klaas has mastered various percussion instruments such as derbouka , tabla , kanjira , riqq , congas , bongos , djembé , timbales , frame drum , cajón and a few others.
