During his school days, Lercher regularly worked as a construction site assistant in the summer months. After doing community service with the volunteer fire department in his hometown, he began studying political science at the University of Vienna in 2006. In 2012 he graduated with a bachelor's degree .

Political career

Lercher began his political work in 2005 in the Socialist Youth (SJ) Styria, of which he was state chairman from 2008 to 2013. After the Styrian state election in 2010 , he entered the state parliament via the SPÖ state list. With the election slogan "I like MAX LERCHER", he was able to win more than 1500 preferential votes as a youth candidate for the Social Democrats and on November 9, 2010 he became the youngest member of the Styrian state parliament. As SPÖ youth spokesman in the state parliament, he was involved in the negotiation of the new youth protection law, the introduction of the TOP TICKET for Styrian schoolchildren and apprentices and the introduction of a youth impact assessment for new state laws.

When the controversial begging ban was introduced by the Styrian reform partnership in 2011, he was the only member of the government coalition to vote against this ban. At the SPÖ state party conference in March 2012, his application for the nationwide abolition of the "small game of chance" was accepted, but the implementation failed both nationwide and in Styria.

At the end of 2012, Lercher was unanimously elected by the party executive of the SPÖ Styria to coordinate the large-scale reform of the state party. In this role he was responsible for opening up and reorganizing the Styrian SPÖ. Since 2014 he has been regional party chairman of the SPÖ Obersteiermark-West.

On December 21, 2017, he was elected to succeed Christoph Matznetter as Federal Managing Director of the SPÖ. Oliver Wieser succeeded him as regional manager of the SPÖ Styria . Wolfgang Moitzi succeeded him as a member of the state parliament in September 2018 . With the change of party chairmanship from Christian Kern to Pamela Rendi-Wagner , Lercher was replaced by Thomas Drozda as federal manager of the SPÖ on September 25, 2018 .

An article in the tabloid Austria dated October 18, 2019 caused disagreements within the SPÖ. It was stated that Lercher had received a consulting contract of 20,000 euros per month after he left the federal executive and switched to Leykam Medien AG . The leaked information came from an SPÖ board meeting. Andreas Kollross spoke of a "foul on Max Lercher from Löwelstrasse ". According to Lercher, there is a service contract between the SPÖ and Leykam Medien AG , and as managing director he receives a salary of 6,000 euros. He announced lawsuit against the reporting from Austria .

In the National Council election in Austria in 2019 , he ran as the SPÖ top candidate in the Upper Styria regional constituency , won a mandate and entered the National Council as a member of the National Council on October 23, 2019 .

Lercher is married and has a sister. His father Maximilian is a council member for the SPÖ in St. Peter am Kammersberg.
