from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maynard Victor Olson (born October 2, 1943 in Washington, DC ) is an American geneticist at the University of Washington , in Seattle , Washington .

Life

After studying at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena , California , Olson earned a Ph.D. in 1970 from the later Nobel Prize winner Henry Taube at Stanford University in Stanford , California. in chemistry . First, Olson received a professorship (assistant professor) in chemistry at Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire .

During a sabbatical year at the University of Washington , Seattle , Washington , Olson turned to genetics. In 1979 he was appointed professor of genetics at Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri . Since 1992, Olson is back at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he chairs of medical genetics and computer science (Computer Science) holds.

Act

Olson studies yeasts as a genetic system. Together with Ben Hall in Seattle, he achieved pioneering work on yeast tRNA . Among other things, he was one of the first to use the restriction fragment length polymorphism . Olson has developed instruments to characterize medium-sized gene segments (between 10 3 and 10 6 base pairs ) using physical ( Orthogonal field alternation gelelectrophoresis , OFAGE), biological ( Yeast Artificial Chromosome , YAC) and sequence-analytical ( sequence-tagged sites , STS) methods a high-resolution physical gene map of the genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to create. Olson's results play a central role in genome analysis projects and laid the foundation for the organization of the human genome project in which he was involved in a leading role for the Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

More recent work deals with the genetic changes that the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa undergoes during the often decades-long infestation of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and which ultimately often lead to patient death. Olson is committed to ensuring that the results of genetic research come into the common possession.
