The Montgeoffroy castle is one of the better known castles in the Loire region. Louis-Georges-Erasme de Contades began building the complex in 1772 on a site that an ancestor had acquired in 1676 and on which a ruinous castle building existed from medieval times. Contades planned to take his retirement home here. The work planned and directed by the Parisian architect Jean Benoît Vincent Barré lasted until 1775. The architect respected the plan of the old complex and integrated two towers and the chapel from 1543 into the new building. The French Revolution and all subsequent storms survived Montgeoffrroy surprisingly, virtually unscathed, the original interiors of the 18th century with all the furniture and the complete kitchen can be admired so today. In addition, a large number of horse-drawn carriages can be viewed.
