Medergen (Swiss German: Medrige) is an alpine settlement situated at 2000  m near Arosa in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . It belonged to the former municipality Langwies in Schanfigg and lies on a glorious high plateau west of the Strelakette in the lap of the 2706  m high Mederger Flue . Medergen has been part of the Arosa municipality since the beginning of 2013.

history

Medergen was originally the only alpine area of the then Rhaeto-Romanic valley population, but like Sapün , Fondei and Arosa, it was settled around 1300 by German-speaking Walsers who immigrated from the Landwassertal and upgraded to permanent settlement. Medergen was mentioned in a document in 1272 in connection with " usufructum alpinum de Sampuin et Medi ", 1307 as "alpem dictam Mederi" and 1508 as "uf Medrion". The name is derived from the Walser Meder (mowable alpine grass areas). The year-round settlement of Medergen did not take as long as, for example, in Fondei or Sapün, due to the altitude and the corresponding difficult climatic conditions. Medergen never had its own school or post office.

Todays use

The typical Walser houses on Medergen are not allowed to have electricity or running water for legal reasons. In the snow-free time, they are sometimes still used as hut dwellings , but mostly for purely holiday purposes. Together with Sapün Dörfji and Strassberg im Fondei , the settlement is one of the Langwieser localities of national importance ( ISOS ).

The only mountain restaurant "Alpenrose" is only operated in the summer season, from mid-June to October. On the other hand, the Naturfreundehaus Medergerfluh, the highest located Naturfreundehaus in Switzerland, on the edge of the Medergen settlement is accessible all year round.

Development

Medergen can be reached from the Sunnenrüti via a road branching off from Schanfiggerstrasse or via the Schanfigger Höhenweg / Walserweg Graubünden from the Arosa reservoir and Grünsee . Footpaths lead further into Sapün, over the Tritt and Latschüelfurgga to Davos Platz and over the Schwifurgga (actually: Furggaltji ) to Davos Frauenkirch. In winter Medergen - like the neighboring Alp Tieja - is a popular ski touring destination due to its location.

Varia

The Swiss Irontrail , which was first held in July 2012 , has been leading from Urdenfürggli - Hörnlihütte via Carmenna - Weisshorn to Arosa and from there via Medergen- Sapün - Strelapass to Davos .

Episode 10 of the 10th season of Bauer, single, sucht ... with guest presenter Christa Rigozzi was shot in the summer of 2014 in Medergen and on the Untersee in Arosa.
