Marcel van Meerhaeghe (1986)

Marcel Alfons Gilbert van Meerhaeghe (born April 12, 1921 in Wetteren , East Flanders , † March 22, 2014 in Ghent ) was a Belgian economist , journalist , columnist and professor of international economic relations at Ghent University .

biography

Van Meerhaeghe studied economics and sociology at Ghent University. From 1953 to 1954 he was a faculty advisor at the NATO Defense College . Since 1957 he was a full professor of economics and foreign economic theory at the University of Ghent. Since 1973 he has been visiting professor at Wolfson College (Cambridge) . After his retirement in Belgium in 1986, he taught at the London School of Economics , at the University of Tilburg , the University of Turin and the University La Sapienza .

His research interests ranged from public finance (monetary theory) to political economy and contributions to the history of theory. He was a staunch European.

Euro criticism

In 1998 van Meerhaeghe was one of the signatories of the declaration “The euro is coming too early”, a manifesto by more than 160 professors against the premature introduction of the euro (co-initiator Renate Ohr ).

Memberships

Since 1955 MAG van Meerhaeghe was a member of the think tank Royal Institute for International Relations . He was also a member of the Institut Européen think tank (Institutum Europaeum: 1979–2002) and the conservative think tank Center for the New Europe (1993–2009). Since 1988 he was a member of the Mont Pèlerin Society .
