The Mellenbach is a mountain stream almost 11.5 kilometers long in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg , which flows into the Bregenzer Ach as a left tributary . It rises a few meters below the tip of the Portlakopf in the Damülser Mountains and thus in the middle of the Bregenz Forest Mountains , then flows through the uninhabited Mellental and finally flows into the Bregenz Ach in the center of the Bregenzerwald community of Mellau .
etymology
Several place names in the area of the Mellenbach carry the obviously eponymous prefix Mellen , which, according to Albrecht Greule (this one after Geiger) , is said to come from the Rhaeto-Romanic word mellen for "yellow". It is unclear whether the place names Mellental, Mellenalpe and finally the community name Mellau are derived from the name of the river, or whether it is an area name. With the place name Mellau, for example, Greule suggests a connection between the river name and the name Au as an abbreviation for an alluvial forest or the river itself.
River course
The Mellenbach rises just below the top of the Portlakopf and not far from the Portlaalpe in the Damüls Mountains in the municipality of Damüls at around 1756 m above sea level. A. The source is in the alpine area and initially turns the Mellenbach into a small trickle , which after a few hundred meters is fed and thus enlarged by the Gehrerbach and Sünserbach streams flowing to the left and right (which drains the Sünser See ). In this first section of its river course, after the Mellenbach has left the Damüls municipality, it quickly meets the joint municipal boundary of Laterns and Dornbirn , with the creek itself forming this municipality boundary for a few hundred meters.
Finally, the Mellenbach flows in a few bends down into the Mellental formed by it and is initially entirely within the municipality of Dornbirn. The Mellental is a side valley of the Bregenzerwald and part of the 75 km² nature reserve Hohe Kugel - Hoher Freschen - Mellental . It is therefore not built on and only accessible through alpine farming and hiking routes, which means that it offers a largely untouched natural diversity. In the Mellental, the Mellenbach flows in a north-easterly direction and again crosses a municipality boundary, namely that between Dornbirn and Mellau , where it again forms the border between these two municipalities for a few hundred meters. The larger part of the (front) Mellental and thus also the course of the Mellenbach river is located in the municipality of Mellau.
After a total of about ten kilometers, the river reaches the exit of the Mellal valley towards the valley of the Bregenzer Ach, where the local area of the municipality of Mellau begins. The Mellenbach flows through the districts of Bengath and Unterm Rain on the last kilometer of its river course through the Mellau town center and finally reaches its confluence with the Bregenzer Ach in the center of Mellau, with the Bregenzerwaldstraße (L 200), the most important state road in the Bregenzerwald, just before that , the Mellenbach crosses. In this area, both the Mellenbach and the Bregenzer Ach are severely narrowed due to the risk of flooding from both rivers due to artificial water systems . When the Mellenbach flows into the Bregenzer Ach, the former has an average water temperature of 6 to 7 degrees Celsius higher than the Bregenz Ach.
