history

State hospital in the former Merxhausen monastery

Merxhausen was probably first mentioned in a document in 973 as "Marcharohusen". What is certain, however, is the mention in 1145 as "Merkereshusen" and 1151 as "Merkirshusen".

In the year 1213 in Merkeshusen the monastery foundation of Messrs Hermann and Dietrich von Blumenstein von Dörnberg by the Archbishop of Mainz is documented as Augustinian Canons - double pen .

In 1533, Landgrave Philipp I founded a state hospital in the former Merxhausen monastery . This later became the facility for mentally ill people that still exists today. At the Merxhausen Klosterspiele , which takes place every two years , these people are integrated into the activities on the open-air stage .
