The Haferbach is an orographically left tributary of the Werre in East Westphalia-Lippe .

course

The Haferbach rises at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest near Oerlinghausen -Wellenbruch, a few meters below the state road 967. From its source , the stream first flows east, crosses Oetenhausen, reaches Währentrup and takes a small, unnamed, 2.9 km long Tributary that rises in the Teutoburg Forest. The water continues to flow in a north-easterly direction, flows through Helpup , reaches the Lagens urban area and crosses the Lagens districts of Kachtenhausen and Ohrsen . After a total stretch of almost ten kilometers, the Haferbach flows into the Werre north of Ohrsen on the left at km 40.1. The Haferbach is one of the largest tributaries of the Upper Werre and flows exclusively in the Lippe district .

In contrast to the information provided by the State Surveying Office of North Rhine-Westphalia, a brook that rises between the Tönsberg and the Hunneckenkammer is referred to as the upper course or source brook of the Haferbach in the German basic map and in linguistic usage . According to the state surveying office, this stream is not recorded, i.e. an unnamed and unstationed stream. The stream flows from its origin to the north, past Gut Wistinghausen and touches the Währentrups settlement area . Here it is dammed into a pond. To the north of Währentrup, near the sports hall, it records the tributary designated by the state survey office as "Haferbach".

environment

Water quality

The Haferbach has a high level of organic pollution in the upper reaches, which results from heavy pollution with ammonium -N. This can be seen from the frequent occurrence of ciliates . Therefore, the Haferbach is classified here as excessively polluted in water  quality class IV. In the further course the water quality improves up to the mouth to quality class III (heavily polluted). More recent surveys of the water quality of the Haferbach show a clear improvement in the quality situation. The upper and lower reaches of the stream belong to quality class II (moderately contaminated), the middle course to quality class II-III (critically contaminated).

natural reserve

The lower Haferbachtal has been under nature protection since 2006. Together with the Werre valley, it forms the 56 hectare nature reserve Werreniederung and Haferbachtal belonging to Lage . This is characterized by a floodplain with woody stands and a near-natural brook valley.
