The Mesnerbichl nature reserve is a nature reserve and a natural monument in the Erling district of the Andechs community in the Starnberg district . At the same time it is part of the conservation area, "Western part of the district of Starnberg" and the FFH area "moraine between Ammersee and Lake Starnberg."

history

In the landscape around Andechs, areas have been preserved that have always been used extensively because of poor accessibility or insufficient soil quality . There - as with the Mesnerbichl - a natural habitat for plants that have become rare in the meantime has been preserved. In order to avoid endangering the original vegetation in the future, the moraine hill was placed under protection by the Reich Nature Conservation Authority on August 4, 1941. It is therefore one of the oldest nature reserves in Bavaria. In 2004, Natura 2000 , the European Union's network of protected areas, was recognized as an FFH area.

The Mesnerbichl once belonged to the St. Vitus Church in Erling. This explains its older name “Erbesberg”. that the Ebersberg monastery held the church patronage around 1317 . As the use of Bichls until the 20th century the sacristan state of the church as a reward for his services, the popularly changed to "Mesner Bichl".

Geography and geology

The Mesnerbichl lies at an altitude of 716  m above sea level. NN in the middle of the "Machtlfinger Hügelland" which surrounds the area between the Ammersee basin and the Würmsee basin. The pre-alpine landscape, characterized by terminal moraines , drumlins and glacial drainage channels, was created towards the end of the Würm glacial period through the thrust of the Isar-Loisach glacier .

The nature reserve between the towns of Erling and Machtlfing can only be reached via hiking trails. Narrow paths lead through the delightful park-like landscape on the hill.

Flora and fauna

The grassland vegetation on inaccessible hills in the landscape between Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg is one of the most interesting areas of southern Bavaria in terms of plant geography . A special feature of the Mesnerbichl is the protected narcissus anemone or alpine mountain cockerel, which blooms here in lavish abundance on dry, calcareous slopes in June. It is the only non-alpine place where this anemone grows in Germany. In addition to many other plants such as the lady's slipper or the flour primrose , the stemless gentian can also be found here. The marsh gladiolus , also a botanical rarity, has its second largest occurrence outside the Alps in the damp littered meadows in the south of the nature reserve . The Bund Naturschutz has long been committed to preserving this plant. The gladiolus occurrences were recorded in 2012 as part of a Glücksspirale project. In the Mesnerbichl area, the population comprised around 17,000 individuals of the swamp gladiolus.

Map butterfly in the nature reserve Mesnerbichl

The limestone grassland on the west and north side of the Mesnerbichl is the natural habitat for numerous species of insects, especially butterflies, whose food mainly consists of flower nectar. The number of butterflies that can be found here, such as the admiral , the little fox , the meadowsweet mother-of-pearl butterfly or the country map, is correspondingly large .

In order to preserve the species-rich flora and fauna of the hill, the BN has bought some meadows and former pasture areas in the area and leased the rest of the area. Since then, volunteers have been keeping the protected area from encroachment through annual mowing with a bar mower and scythes.
