Fort Massac

After the region was first inhabited by various Indian peoples, the French built the Fort Massac in 1757 as a fortified military post against the English during the "French and Indian War" . During the war, the fort was destroyed by Chickasaw warriors .

In 1794 the fort was rebuilt by order of George Washington and served as an American military post for the next 20 years. After the fort was damaged during the New Madrid earthquake in 1811, the fort was abandoned in 1814 and the wood was used for buildings by surrounding settlers.

In 1839, today's city was laid out according to plan, around a mile west of the former fort. In 1843, Massac County was founded and the city became its administrative seat.

During the civil war , a training camp for the Union Army was maintained here.

The Daughters of the American Revolution acquired the area of the then fort in 1903 and had a replica of the old fort built. In 1908, Fort Massac State Park was the first state park in Illinois.

Since 1958, there has been a ConverDyn factory in Metropolis, a joint subsidiary of Honeywell and General Atomics , which produces uranium hexafluoride . This is processed further in the uranium enrichment plant in nearby Paducah on the opposite bank of the river.
