The metropolitan region of Goiânia , officially Portuguese Região Metropolitana de Goiânia , also known as Grande Goiânia , is a metropolitan area around the capital Goiânia of the Brazilian state of Goiás .
It is the first metropolitan region in the Brazilian Midwest and, since March 2011, has comprised twenty communities with 2,173,141 million inhabitants and a population density of around 300 inhabitants per square kilometer. It is the twelfth largest metropolitan region in Brazil. As of July 1, 2018, the population was estimated at 2,518,775.
Emergence
Due to the amendment to the state law from the end of 1999, the newly defined metropolitan region of Goiânia originally comprised eleven municipalities, along with Goiânia the nine directly adjacent municipalities:
- Santo Antônio de Goiás
- Neropolis
- Goianápolis
- Senador Canedo
- Aparecida de Goiânia
- Aragoiânia
- Abadia de Goiás
- Trindade
- Goianira
as well as the municipality of Hidrolândia bordering it in the south .
(For integrated development planning of the metropolitan area port. : Região Desenvolvimento Integrado de Goiás - RDIG ) further nine municipalities were in March 2010, after several interim changes on the legislative level, affiliated:

- Guapó
- Inhumas
- Nova Veneza
- Terezópolis de Goiás
The economically strong city of Anápolis with a further 335,032 inhabitants is not part of the Goiânia metropolitan region .
With an annual growth rate of 2.5% (2000–2007), i. H. Over 50,000 inhabitants / year, the metropolitan region of Goiânia, together with Brasília and Salvador, is one of the fastest growing regions in Brazil.
