Michael Brundin (born October 5, 1965 in Timrå ) is a former Swedish football player . The defender , who played in Sweden and Portugal over the course of his career, won the Swedish championship title with AIK in 1998 and twice the national cup .
Career
Career start in Sweden
Brundin started playing football at Kubikenborgs IF . In 1977 the defender joined the youth team at IFK Sundsvall . There he went through the various youth teams and made his debut in the lower-class men's team.
In 1987 Brundin moved to local rivals GIF Sundsvall , who had been promoted to Allsvenskan . In the first two years, the goal difference was decisive for the success of his team: After losing the league in the first year due to the better value compared to the same point competitor Halmstads BK - minus six compared to minus 17 - he missed with the team in the 1988 season at ± 0 only because of the poorer relationship with the Gothenburg club Örgryte IS , which had scored four goals more than conceded, participation in the championship finals. He was unable to build on this success with the team and was relegated to the second-rate Division 1 with her the following year .
In Division 1 Norra , Brundin managed to win the season straight away with the club and after a 0-1 defeat at the beginning by a 4-1 second leg win in the promotion games, the direct return to the Swedish elite series. There she managed only one win of the season, so she had to compete in the Kvalsvenskan , the relegation round consisting of the four last-placed teams of the Allsvenskan and the two best-placed teams of the two second division seasons. Again, the success failed, after three wins from 14 games, he was relegated again with the team. This time he finished only midfield with the team, so that a return to the House of Lords was missed in the following years.
Change abroad and return
Although only second division players invited the Portuguese club Vitória FC Brundin and Jonny Rödlund to a trial training session in the summer of 1994 . The club took him under contract and at times he developed into a regular player in central defense in the Primeira Divisão . Nevertheless, he left after a season in which he had occupied fourth place with the team behind champions FC Porto , Sporting Lisbon and Benfica Lisbon , the club in the direction of new league SC Campomaiorense . The first season in the highest league in the club's history was disappointing, the team was second to bottom in the table and only had one relegation place and had to go into the second division with FC Felgueiras and FC Tirense .
Brundin returned to Sweden after relegation and signed a contract with multiple national champions AIK , where Erik Hamrén , one of his former coaches from Sundsvall times, had taken over the coaching post. Under Hamrén, he immediately established himself as a regular in the defense chain and reached the quarter-finals of the 1996/97 European Cup Winners' Cup with the previous year's cup winner . He had made an own goal in the second leg of the second leg against Olympique Nîmes to make it 0-1, which put the 3-1 away win at risk. In the round of the last eight, the team met the eventual title winners FC Barcelona , who wrested the team around players like Nebojša Novaković , Pascal Simpson and Krister Nordin after a 1-3 first leg defeat at Camp Nou a 1-1 draw in the second leg.
In the summer of 1997, the Brundin achieved his first title win with AIK at the Ryavallen stadium with a 2-1 win over IF Elfsborg in the cup final. As a result, he took part with the club in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1997/98 , where he could not build on the successes of the previous year's competition and failed in the first round, in which he ran up in both games, at the Slovenian representative Primorje Ajdovščina . After Olof Mellberg's commitment before the start of the 1998 season , he briefly had to worry about his regular place in central defense, but was able to assert himself as a regular player and contributed to winning the Von Rosens Cup as the Swedish national champion in 24 league games . In qualifying for the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League , the team met AEK Athens and qualified for the group stage after a 1-0 home win and a 1-1 draw. There he ran against FC Arsenal , Fiorentina and FC Barcelona and was eliminated from the competition with the team as the bottom of the group.
1999 Brundin moved with the team again in the cup final. In the final, which was played in two games this time, a 1-0 win and a 0-0 draw against IFK Gothenburg marked the second cup victory in the defender's career. Since he lived with his family in Sundsvall and had to commute to Solna for training and games, he decided in 2000 not to extend his contract with AIK, which was running out. He returned to his first professional station GIF Sundsvall, where he ended his active career after a season in the Allsvenskan.
In total, Brundin played 202 first division games in Sweden - 86 games for GIF Sundsvall, in which he was able to score, and 116 games for AIK, in which he was without a goal. Since the end of his career, Brundin has worked for Försäkringskassan , a state administrative authority for social security.
