Michael Ipgrave

Michael Geoffrey Ipgrave OBE (born April 18, 1958 in Northampton , Northamptonshire ) is a British Anglican theologian . On March 2, 2016, his appointment as Bishop of Lichfield in the Church of England was announced.

Life

Michael Geoffrey Ipgrave grew up in a small village in Northamptonshire in the English Midlands . He attended from 1968 to 1975 the Magdalen College School in Brackley , a state school in South Northamptonshire . From 1975 to 1978 he studied mathematics at Oriel College of the University of Oxford , where he in mathematics with the Bachelor of Arts (BA; 1st class Hons) graduated. He then worked for about a year in a factory in Birmingham . To prepare for his priesthood, he attended Ripon College in Cuddesdon , an Anglican theological college near Oxford, from 1979 to 1982 . At the same time he studied theology at the University of Oxford, where he graduated in 1981 as a Bachelor (1st class Hons). In 2000 he obtained a PhD in theology from the University of Durham , and in 2004 a Master of Arts (MA) in “Japanese Religions” from the University of London (SOAS).

In 1982, he was in the Diocese of Peterborough to the deacon ordained; In 1983 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1982 to 1985 as assistant vicar ( Assistant Curate ) at All Saints Church in Oakham in the Diocese of Peterborough. From 1985 to 1987 he was assistant pastor ( assistant priest ) at the Church of the Resurrection in Chiba in the diocese of Yokohama in Japan . After his return to Great Britain he was pastor ( Team Vicar ) in the Diocese of Leicester from 1987 to 1990 , then from 1990 to 1999 Pastor ( Team Rector ) at the Parish Church of the Holy Spirit in Leicester.

From 1990 he also took on important tasks in church administration. From 1990 to 1999 he was a consultant for inter-religious relationships ( Bishop's Adviser on Interfaith Relations ) of the then Bishop of Leicester, Tom Butler . From 1992 to 1999 he was Research Assistant and Domestic Chaplain to the Bishop of Leicester. From 1999 to 2004 he was an Interfaith Relations Adviser in the Archbishops' Council. From 1999 to 2004 he was also Secretary ( Secretary ) in the Churches' Commission on Interfaith Relations of the Church of England. At the same time he was an honorary assistant pastor ( Hon. Assistant Priest ) at the Parish Church of the Presentation, Leicester, during his time in church administration from 1999 to 2004 .

In 2004 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ; head of a parish) of Southwark . From 2006 to 2007 he was pastor ( priest-in-charge ) at St George the Martyr Church in Southwark. From 2009 to 2010 he was pastor ( priest-in-charge ) at St John Church in Peckham . In 2010 he was also honorary canons ( Canon missioner ) at the Southwark Cathedral . He was Chair of the Southwark and London Diocesan Housing Association and Borough Dean of Southwark from 2010 to 2012 . With his appointment as bishop he gave up these offices.

3 February 2012 Ipgraves appointment was the area bishop ( Area Bishop ) of Woolwich announced in the Diocese of Southwark. In this position he succeeded Christopher Chessun , who had been appointed Diocesan Bishop of Southwark. On March 21, 2012, he was ordained bishop by then Archbishop of Canterbury , Rowan Williams , during a service at Southwark Cathedral . In May 2013, during a service at St Peter the Apostle Church in Woolwich , Ipgrave prayed for the British soldier Lee Rigby, who was murdered by Islamists .

On March 2, 2016, Ipgrave's appointment as Bishop of Lichfield was announced; he succeeded Jonathan Gledhill , who had retired on September 30, 2015. His official enthronement took place in September 2016 at Lichfield Cathedral .

Honors and publications

In the New Year's Awards 2011, Ipgrave was awarded the Order of the British Empire “in recognition of his services to inter-religious dialogue” .

Michael Ipgrave has published numerous papers on the topics of inter-religious dialogue, inter-denominational dialogue and the relationship between religion and human rights . He edited six volumes on the relationship between Christianity and Islam . He is the author of the book Trinity and Inter Faith Dialogue ( Verlag Peter Lang , 2003) and has written over thirty articles and contributions for magazines, books and anthologies.

Personal

Ipgrave is with Dr. Julia Ipgrave, who works at Roehampton University as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Humanities . The marriage produced three sons, now grown up. Ipgrave's hobbies include the culture and history of Japan, walking and hiking in Staffordshire and Shropshire .
