Michael Menzel (born December 28, 1956 in Ahden ) is a German historian .

Michael Menzel studied history and philosophy at the University of Göttingen from 1976 to 1984 . There he received his doctorate in 1983 with a thesis on the Saxon World Chronicle inspired by Hans Patze . From 1985 to 1989 he had a postdoctoral fellowship from the Görres Society and the German Research Foundation . From 1990 to 2003 Menzel was a research assistant at the commission for the revision of the Regesta Imperii of the Academy of Sciences and Literature at a branch in Munich for the processing of the "Regests of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria". His habilitation took place in Munich in 1996 with the work Sermon and History. Historical examples in the spiritual rhetoric of the Middle Ages. Since 2003 Menzel has been teaching as professor for medieval and regional history at the Humboldt University in Berlin . As the successor to Eckhard Müller-Mertens, Menzel is head of the Berlin office of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH). He has been a full member of the MGH's central management since 2012.

In his dissertation he dealt with the Saxon World Chronicle. He was able to locate 36 manuscripts compared to the MGH edition by Ludwig Weiland , which only takes 24 manuscripts into account. He intends to view the Saxon World Chronicle "as a witness to a past historical thought" and to examine what the author "found as written history and what he himself passed on to his readers as a representation of world history". Menzel edited the regest of Ludwig of Bavaria . He is the author of the volume on the late 13th and early 14th centuries of the latest edition of the classic textbook of German history, the " Gebhardt ". This is the first time in about thirty years that the history of the time from Rudolf von Habsburg to Ludwig the Bavarian was coherent. Menzel noted a “joy in designing” and “a drying up of vigor” since the middle of the 14th century, which is why he characterized this period as “a torso of seven decades”. As examples of the “time of drafts”, Menzel cites the double kingship in politics, territorialization on the princely level , urbanization in the history of settlements, and Avignon exile in church politics . For Menzel, there were six aspects that had an effect on further history: urbanization, the Teutonic Order , the development of royalty, pilgrimage , science and the Gothic character of the old towns.
