Virecourt is a French commune with 470 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Lunéville and the municipality association Meurthe Mortagne Moselle .

geography

The municipality of Virecourt is located on the Moselle , about 20 kilometers southwest of Lunéville and 30 kilometers southeast of Nancy . The municipality of Virecourt, located in the south of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, gradually rises by around 80 meters in altitude from the Moselle valley to the south-east. In the south, the municipality has an approx. 30 hectare portion of the Bois de Villacourt , which together with the Forêt de Charmes in the Vosges department forms a contiguous forest area of ​​over 40 square kilometers. North of Virecourt, the terrain slopes down to the Euron tributary , the valley section of which is used by the Nancy- Épinal - Remiremont railway line to get from the Moselle to the Meurthetal .

Neighboring communities of Virecourt are Bayon in the north, Froville in the east (point of contact), Villacourt in the south-east, Bainville-aux-Miroirs in the south-west, Mangonville in the west and Roville-devant-Bayon in the north-west.

history

In 1255, the abbess of the monastery north of Nancy in Bouxières-aux-Dames is said to have allowed the Templars in Xugney to dig a canal to use water from the Moselle for a water mill in Virecourt.

In the 14th century Virecourt belonged to the Lords of the Order of Malta , which is still indicated by the Maltese cross in the coat of arms.

In the Museum of Ancient and Contemporary Art ( Musée départemental d'Art ancien et contemporain ) in Épinal there is a stone Gallo-Roman altar that was used as the baptismal font of the Virecourt church.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are three farms in the municipality of Virecourt (cereal cultivation, cattle breeding). There are smaller vineyards in the south of the municipality.

The main road D 112 leads through Virecourt from Charmes to Bayon . Near the municipality of Laneuveville-devant-Bayon , located six kilometers to the west, there is a connection to the motorway-like RN 57 from Nancy to Épinal . Bayon train station, located in the municipality of Virecourt, is on the Nancy-Épinal- Remiremont line , operated by the TER Lorraine company.
